Ann Taylor vs LOFT: Which Brand Is Better for Women Over 50?

If you’ve ever wondered whether Ann Taylor or LOFT is the better choice over 50, you’re definitely not alone. Both brands are owned by the same company, and both carry classic, feminine styles, but they really do serve different purposes.

In general, I’d say Ann Taylor leans more polished, refined, and tailored, while LOFT feels softer, more relaxed, and casual. Neither one is “better” overall. It really depends on your lifestyle, body shape, and how dressed up you like to feel day to day.

I think of it this way. Ann Taylor is the brand I’d reach for when I want to look polished and a little more elevated. LOFT is the brand I’d reach for when I want to look cute, casual, and comfortable without feeling like I tried to reinvent myself before breakfast. Lol!

Today, I’m comparing the two brands and sharing some pieces that really show the personality of each one.

The Quick Answer: Ann Taylor Is Dressier, LOFT Is Easier

The easiest way to explain the difference is this: Ann Taylor is dressier, and LOFT is easier. Ann Taylor usually feels more polished, tailored, and refined. LOFT usually feels more casual, relaxed, and everyday-friendly.

Neither one is better for every woman. If your calendar includes church, work, dinners out, meetings, or events where you want to look a little more pulled together, Ann Taylor may fit your lifestyle better. If your days are more casual, filled with errands, lunch with friends, travel, grandkids, or just wanting to look nice without feeling dressed up, LOFT may be the one you wear more often.

Honestly, I think most women over 50 could use a little of both. It is kind of like having dressy dishes and everyday dishes. Ann Taylor is when you want to look like you remembered the good plates. LOFT is when you still want to look cute, but nobody better ask you to iron anything.

Ann Taylor Is Best If You Like Polished, Tailored Style

When I think of Ann Taylor, this is the outfit that pops into my mind. I bought this outfit several years ago, and I still wear it regularly. I think it is classy and dressy, yet still casual enough to wear out with friends.

If you work, attend church regularly, go out to dinners, or simply prefer a more elevated look, Ann Taylor often shines. The fabrics, cuts, and details usually feel a bit more refined.

Ann Taylor also tends to be a great place to shop when you want pieces that feel timeless instead of overly trendy. You can usually find clean lines, pretty details, and clothing that works for real life without looking boring. That is the sweet spot for most of us after 50. We want modern, not teenage. Polished, not stiff. Comfortable, but not sloppy.

Ann Taylor Pants Are Great for a Clean, Streamlined Look

Grace Easy Fit Pant

These Grace easy fit pants are a perfect example of Ann Taylor’s polished style. The silhouette looks clean and streamlined without being overly tight, which is something many women over 50 appreciate.

I also love how versatile these pants are. You could wear them with flats for daytime or dress them up with heels and jewelry for dinner or events. These pants feel timeless instead of trendy, and that makes them the kind of piece you can reach for again and again.

A good pair of polished pants can make an entire outfit look more intentional. You can add a simple tee, sweater, blouse, or jacket, and suddenly you look like you had a plan all along. We won’t tell anyone if the plan came together five minutes before you walked out the door.

Ann Taylor Tops Feel Feminine Without Looking Too Sweet

Lace Trim Top

This lace trim top has that feminine elegance that Ann Taylor does so well. The lace detail adds softness and polish without looking overly frilly or too young.

I think this top would look beautiful paired with trousers, white denim, or even under a blazer. It feels refined while still remaining wearable for everyday life. That is what I like about Ann Taylor. Their feminine pieces usually still feel grown-up and classic.

Lace-Trimmed Sweater Top

This lace trimmed sweater top combines softness with structure beautifully. Sweater tops often look especially flattering over 50 because they skim the body instead of clinging.

I also appreciate how elevated this piece feels. This could easily transition from daytime errands to dinner with just a few accessories. Add earrings, a pretty sandal, and a nice bag, and you are out the door looking polished without feeling overdressed.

Ann Taylor Works Well for Curvy Fits and Dressier Pants

Grace Straight Pant Curvy Fit

These Grace pants in the curvy fit are wonderful if you need a little more room through the hips and thighs. Finding polished pants that work for curvier figures can be difficult, but Ann Taylor usually handles tailoring very well.

The silhouette on these pants feels modern without going overly wide or trendy. That balance makes them incredibly wearable. They still give you a clean line, but they are not trying to squeeze you into a shape that only existed when we were 23 and living on Diet Coke and hope.

For women over 50, fit matters more than ever. Pants that pull, gap, cling, or wrinkle in all the wrong places can ruin an outfit fast. A curvy fit can make a big difference because it gives you room where you need it while still keeping the overall look polished.

Ann Taylor Button-Down Shirts Feel Classic With A Feminine Touch

Eyelet Button Down Shirt

This eyelet button-down shirt gives a classic shirt silhouette a softer, more feminine feel. Eyelet details can sometimes feel too youthful, but this version still looks polished and sophisticated.

I’d wear this shirt with white jeans, ankle pants, or tucked into trousers for a crisp summer look. It has that fresh, clean style that works well when you want to look put together but not fussy.

This is also the kind of top that can go casual or dressy, depending on how you style it. With jeans and sandals, it feels relaxed. With trousers and jewelry, it looks more elevated. I love pieces that can do more than one thing because my closet does not need any more one-hit wonders.

LOFT Is Best If You Like Relaxed, Everyday Style

LOFT tends to feel more easygoing and everyday-friendly. The styles are usually softer, looser, and less structured, which many women love for casual dressing.

If Ann Taylor is the brand I think of for polish, LOFT is the brand I think of for real-life casual outfits. It is great for days when you want to look cute, but you also need to sit comfortably, run errands, travel, or possibly bend down to pick up whatever Lucy decided to drag into the living room.

LOFT pieces usually feel a little more relaxed and approachable. They often have soft fabrics, easy waistbands, casual tops, and lightweight layers that work well for everyday outfits.

LOFT Pants Are Great for Casual Comfort

Sawyer Pull-On Linen Pants

These Sawyer pull-on linen pants are exactly the kind of relaxed piece LOFT does best. The easy pull-on waistband makes them comfortable, while the linen fabric keeps them cool and breathable.

I think these pants would be wonderful for travel, casual lunches, or warm summer days when you still want to look put together without feeling restricted. They have that easy summer feel that makes getting dressed simple.

Pull-on pants can be tricky because some look a little too much like lounge pants. These still feel cute and intentional, which is the goal. Comfort is wonderful, but I still want to look like I got dressed on purpose.

LOFT Tops Are Easy for Warm Weather and Everyday Wear

Everyday Dolman Shirt

This dolman shirt has that soft, relaxed silhouette LOFT is known for. Dolman sleeves create an easy drape that feels comfortable without looking sloppy.

I’d pair this shirt with jeans, cropped pants, or shorts for an easy everyday outfit that still feels stylish. It is the type of top that works well when you want arm coverage without wearing something tight or clingy.

Dolman sleeves can also be forgiving through the upper arm area, which many women over 50 appreciate. They give you movement and softness without adding a lot of bulk. That is a win in my book.

LOFT Jeans Feel More Casual and Approachable

Rivete Mid Rise Wide Leg Jeans

These white wide-leg jeans feel modern and fresh without looking too trendy. LOFT often does a nice job of taking current silhouettes and making them approachable for everyday women.

I especially like that these jeans feel relaxed instead of stiff. They would look adorable with sandals, sneakers, or lightweight sweaters.

White jeans can feel intimidating, but a relaxed wide-leg style can actually be easier to wear than a super skinny pair. They skim the body instead of clinging, and they give outfits that fresh summer look that always feels crisp.

LOFT Oversized Shirts Work Best When Styled With Balance

Linen Cotton Everyday Oversized Pocket Shirt

This oversized pocket shirt is one of those throw-on-and-go pieces that becomes a summer staple. The linen-cotton blend keeps it breathable while still giving it a little structure.

For women over 50, the key with oversized pieces is balance. I’d front-tuck this shirt slightly or pair it with slimmer bottoms to keep proportions flattering. You want relaxed, not swallowed whole.

Oversized tops can be wonderful in the summer because they feel airy and comfortable, but they need a little styling so they do not overwhelm your frame. A half-tuck, rolled sleeves, or a slimmer pair of pants can make all the difference.

LOFT Adds A Little More Playfulness

Tie Cuff Off-Shoulder Blouse

This off-shoulder blouse shows LOFT’s slightly more playful side. While Ann Taylor tends to stay classic and polished, LOFT often experiments a bit more with relaxed trends and casual silhouettes.

I actually think this blouse could look very pretty over 50 when styled simply. Pairing it with clean white denim or relaxed trousers would keep the look sophisticated instead of overly youthful.

The trick with pieces like this is keeping the rest of the outfit simple. When one item has a little personality, you do not need the whole outfit competing for attention. This blouse could be fun for vacation, dinner out, or a casual summer evening.

So Which Brand Is Better Over 50?

Honestly, I think many women over 50 will enjoy having both in their closet because they serve different purposes.

If you like polished outfits, tailored silhouettes, elevated basics, workwear-inspired pieces, and classic sophistication, then Ann Taylor may fit your style better.

If you prefer relaxed outfits, soft fabrics, casual everyday dressing, easy layering pieces, and comfort-first styling, then LOFT may feel more natural for your lifestyle.

Personally, I think the sweet spot is mixing the two together. A polished Ann Taylor pant paired with a relaxed LOFT top can create that perfect balance between structured and comfortable.

My Honest Pick: I’d Mix Ann Taylor and LOFT

I do not think this needs to be an either-or decision. I think the smartest closet has a little bit of both. Ann Taylor gives you those polished, tailored pieces that make an outfit feel refined. LOFT gives you the softer, more relaxed pieces you actually want to wear on a normal Tuesday.

For me, the sweet spot is mixing the two together. A polished Ann Taylor pant with a relaxed LOFT top feels modern, comfortable, and realistic for everyday life. That is usually what most of us are looking for after 50 anyway. We want to look current and put together, but we do not want clothes that make us feel like we are attending a board meeting just to pick up prescriptions.

So, which one is better? Ann Taylor is better for polish. LOFT is better for casual comfort. But together, they can make a really wearable wardrobe for women over 50.

Which brand do you find yourself shopping for more often, Ann Taylor or LOFT? Or are you like me and think they both have a place in the closet?

  1. Tania! I do love both these retailers! I’ve always thought Ann Taylor is more business and loft is more casual. Great quality from both stores! I can’t wait to see your family photo!!! Happy Friday ❤️❤️❤️

  2. 🙂 I don’t shop at either store. But going through the post, I think the Loft is more my style. I’m definitely a more casual dresser.

  3. 🙂 I love this post and two of my favorite stores! I have to agree with your comparison, Ann Taylor is perfect for the business woman as well as a dressier event and Loft has the perfect comfy choices!

    1. I love keeping a couple of Ann Taylor pieces in my closet for date nights or nicer occasions.

  4. I used to buy a number of pieces from Loft but lately, I have been disappointed in their clothes. Everything either looks too big and baggy or too form fitting. I haven’t been able to find anything that is flattering for a 60 year old.

Your Ann Taylor selections are pretty.

    1. The oversized, baggy look – out the cropped to look, is what’s trending. So, you’ll see those styles in most of the stores, not just Loft .

  5. Angela Dixon says:

🙂 I have never tried Ann Taylor or Loft. Might have to do that!

  6. Patricia Matlyak says:

    That’s one big fish!

Ann Taylor was and is my go to. Anything I buy in Ann stays in my closet. It rarely goes in the donate pile. She also has tall pants which I just have. When I was working, I bought at least 3 business suits from her a year. Now my purchases are long pants, shorts, pretty tops.

    Happy photo day!

    1. That’s how I feel, too. I tend to keep those pieces longer than Loft. But, I might wear my Loft pieces more often since they are every day styles.

  7. 🙂 Loft is my preference.
