8 Styles of Tops Perfect for Petites
You asked for posts geared toward petites! Even though I’m not considered petite (5’4″ or under), I’ve done the research, and today I’m sharing 8 styles of tops perfect for petites. The good news is that they are all very cute, and affordable, and will look good on most gurls – petite or not!
Styles of Tops Perfect for Petites – The V-Neck
I don’t think there’s a more flattering neckline than the V-Neck. It looks great on almost everyone, but it’s especially helpful for women who want to give the elusion of length. The V draws your eye downward making your torso seem longer. My sister, the apple shape, wears V-neck tops almost exclusively.
This one hits a little too long for petites (more about that later), so you’d definitely want to tuck it in. I LOVE the V pattern that draws your eye down. So cute and less than 25 dollars! It also comes in a lot of different colors and sleeve lengths.
Styles of Tops Perfect for Petites – Belted Tops
Belted tops help define the waist and trick the eye into thinking that you have longer legs! It’s the same logic behind the suggestion that petite gurls wear high-waisted pants. I say it all of the time; wearing clothes that define your shape is much better than trying to hide beneath baggy clothes.
Small Prints Are Best For Petites
Large prints can overwhelm a petite person making their torso seem shorter and smaller. Stick to tops with small prints and patterns. I love how feminine this shirt is with the tiny flowers and flutter sleeves.
This is another great example! The print is a bit larger, but the extra space around it gives the illusion of length. It’s V-necked and a great top to wear if you’re petite. I’m a fan of the CeCe brand and have lots of shirts from them.
Styles of Tops Perfect for Petites – Off The Shoulder
I think shoulders are one of the areas women over 50 forget to show off! These necklines are flattering on almost everyone – not just petites. They elongate the neck and again, give the appearance of width and length.
Styles of Tops Perfect for Petites – Peplum Styles
Like belted tops, these define the waist a bit higher than reality. (Who needs reality? This is fashion! lol). Peplum tops are great for adding length AND width. This silhouette is classy and comfortable. Just make sure the waist hits where it should and that it’s not too low.
Styles of Tops Perfect for Petites – Vertical Stripes
Just as horizontal stripes can make you look wider, vertical stripes can fool the eye to help you look longer and taller! I love this yellow-striped shirt from Amazon. It’s under $30 dollars and comes in a variety of colors. Can’t you just see this with a pair of white pants and yellow sandals?!
Styles of Tops Perfect for Petites – 3/4 Sleeves
Sleeve length is important when you’re petite! Wearing 3/4 length sleeves or pushing up long sleeves gives the illusion of longer arms. This shirt is perfect for petites because it can be worn unbuttoned to a V, has 3/4 length sleeves, and ties at the waist. Pair it with some high-waisted pants and you are ready to go!
Styles of Tops Perfect for Petites – Crop Tops
Long tops or tunics are out when you’re petite. They make the legs look shorter which is NOT the look we’re going for! Tops that hit higher on the body elongate the legs, creating a more balanced proportion.

Verse Of The Day
Psalms 42:11
11 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
Thanks for thinking of us petites. I like the crop tops. I look for those tops if I can’t find petite tops. I have found some at Target. There are several retailers I buy petite clothing from but it’s good to see these tops from retailers I didn’t know about.
Thank you! I appreciate your tips for petites. Ideas for pants/jeans would be greatly appreciated, as well! God Bless!
Thanks so much for your selections and tips on petite tops. Enjoyed and would like to see more options in other categories for petites. Very appreciative. I am petite and struggle with what to wear!
Thank you, Tania for this post for petites! I’m 5’3” and a petite size ALWAYS fits me better. You’ve found some very cute tops for us! It’s so true with me I have always preferred a small print, large prints don’t appeal to me at all. Keep these posts coming!
Thank you so very much, Tania, for including us girls “of limited stature.” Sometimes, we petite women, have a hard time finding tops, pants, dresses…everything…that truly fit us. This is so true for women who are over 50, 60, 70, but still want to dress well and look stylish. Many labels do not make clothing for petites, so this post was especially helpful. Thanks again, and I so enjoy your posts.
Tania, thank you for the petite top advice and beautiful examples!
Love from the short gurls♥️
Thank you, thank you! What a wonderful collection of petite tops. Also really like the double posts. The best always
Being only 5’3 , I can relate to all of these tops. I love wearing the cotton or linen in these hot summer months.
Thanks for the post for us petite gals! I have broad shoulders so I have always thought off the shoulder tops were not a good choice for me. What are your thoughts on that?
Mary, in general, ladies with broad shoulders would probably want to choose a v-neck top. OTS tops will draw more attention to your shoulders.
