15 Fashions Women Over 50 Need In Their Closet
As a woman over 50, I know how important it is to have a wardrobe that is both comfortable and stylish. We all have our style, but there are a few classic fashions women over 50 need to consider having in their closets. These pieces can be mixed and matched to create a variety of looks for different occasions. Since they are classics, you can wear them for a long time.
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – The Classic Little Black Dress (LBD)

Every woman should have at least one LBD in her wardrobe. This classic piece is versatile and can be dressed up or down for many occasions. For a dressed-up look, you could wear your LBD with heels and a statement necklace for a fancy dinner or wedding. For a more casual look, wear it with a cardigan and a pair of flats for church or a casual outing.
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Blazer

A blazer is a smart and stylish addition to any outfit. You could wear it with a pair of dress pants or a skirt and a blouse for a professional look at work, or dress it down by pairing it with jeans and a t-shirt for a casual outing. A blazer is a great way to add a touch of sophistication to any outfit and can be worn in any season.
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Denim Jacket

Do you have a denim jacket in your closet? I hope that you answered yes to that question because they are so versatile that you can wear them with almost anything. I’ve had denim jackets in my closet that I reach for year after year, and they never seem to go out of style! They are available in so many different styles and colors. Don’t ask me how many denim jackets I own (hint: it is way too many, haha!).
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A White/Black T-Shirt

I love a white or black T-shirt, especially in the summer. A black tee and jeans are so cute when worn together, and I highly encourage you to try that look sometime. Everyone should own a black, white, gray, and navy T-shirt, and also a couple of brightly colored ones. I love a v-neckline the best for me, but I also have tees in crewneck and scoop neck. A tee is so versatile since you can wear it alone, under a jacket or cardigan, under a vest, and even as pajamas if you are like me.
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – Flattering Jeans

Jeans are a wardrobe staple that every woman over 50 should have. It’s important to find a pair that fits well and flatters your figure, as this will make them a go-to item in your wardrobe. You could wear your jeans with a sweater and a pair of boots for a casual look or dress them up with a blouse, a belt, and a pair of heels for a night out. I’ve recently done two posts on jeans since they are such an important part of our wardrobe: What Are The Best Pairs of Women’s Jeans Under $50, and What Are The Best Jeans For Women Over 50
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Button-Up Shirt

A crisp white or blue button-down shirt is a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down and pairs well with just about anything. You could wear a button-up shirt with a pair of dress pants, a blazer, and heels for a professional look at work or pair it with a skirt and sandals for a casual outing. A white or blue button-up shirt is a classic fashion women over 50 should have in their wardrobe.
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Classic Skirt

Whether a pencil skirt or a knee-length A-line, every woman should have a classic skirt in her wardrobe. You could wear a classic skirt with a blouse, a belt, and a pair of heels for a professional look at work, or dress it down with a t-shirt and a pair of sneakers for a casual outing. Skirts are a feminine and stylish option that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – Comfortable and Stylish Shoes
It’s important to have a pair of comfortable and stylish shoes. Flats and sneakers are great for everyday wear, while pumps and boots can be dressed up for more formal occasions. When shopping for shoes, it’s important to find a pair that fits well and offers support. This will ensure that you can wear them comfortably for long periods of time. I posted about How To Find Cute Shoes When You Have Foot Issues and on Essential Winter Shoes for Women Over 50 if you want to check those out.
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Trench Coat

A trench coat is a stylish and practical outer layer that can be worn in any season. You could wear it with a pair of jeans and a sweater for a casual look or a dress and heels for a more dressed-up occasion like a fancy dinner or a funeral. Trench coats are a classic and timeless piece that every woman should have in her wardrobe.
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – Statement Jewelry

A statement necklace can add color or interest to any outfit. You could wear it with a plain blouse or dress to dress up your look for a night out or a special occasion, or pair it with a sweater and jeans for a casual outing. Statement necklaces are a fun way to accessorize any outfit. However, if you rarely wear necklaces, try a pair of statement hoops instead.
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Scarf

Scarves can add a splash of color or pattern to your outfit. You could wear it as a neck scarf, a head scarf, or tied around your bag for a pop of color. Scarves are especially useful in the colder months to keep you warm. There are so many styles of scarves to choose from, so you’re sure to find one that fits your style.
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Neutral Colored Handbag
Every woman over 50 should have a neutral handbag that is both functional and stylish. A neutral-colored handbag, like black or brown, can be paired with just about anything and is perfect for everyday use. A bold-colored or statement bag can add a pop of interest to your outfit and is perfect for a special occasion. When shopping for a handbag, it’s important to consider its size and functionality. A larger bag may be more practical for everyday use, while a smaller one may be more suitable for formal occasions.

In addition to these classic pieces, there are a few other items that every woman over 50 should have in her wardrobe. These include:
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Cardigan or Sweater

A cardigan or sweater is a great layering piece that can be worn over a blouse or dress to add warmth and style. I wear sweaters 70% of the time in winter, and I love adding a cardigan to create a slimming effect. You can check out my Winter Sweaters To Add To Your Closet for Women Over 50 to see all the different sweaters available.
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Pair of White jeans (boot-cut, flare, or straight-leg)

I wear white jeans all year long. The “you can’t wear jeans after Labor Day” rule no longer exists so you can get more wear from your white jeans. You can pair them with brown or black booties in the winter months, sandals and tunic tops, or a white tank with a crisp navy jacket in warmer months. Some people make the mistake of wearing white panties with white jeans, but you should wear nude underwear so they don’t show through the pants.
Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Pair of Leggings or Yoga Pants

Leggings and yoga pants are comfortable and versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down. They’re perfect for running errands or working out, but they can also be dressed up with a sweater and boots for a casual outing.
I hope you enjoyed the 15 Fashions Women Over 50 Need In Their Closet. By including these classic pieces and a few other key items in your wardrobe, you’ll have a range of outfits to choose from for any occasion. Remember to wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident, and don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles and combinations to find what works best for you.

Very nice fashion ideas for over 50.. thank you!
My votes for your “best looks” here are the LBD, white blouse, scarf, and white jeans. I did purchase a pair of the Express jeans you wrote about and totally agree regarding an LBD, white blouse, and black and white tees. I for one, however, cannot pull off a jean jacket for the life of me. I’ve tried and have officially given up! As for comfy shoes, have you checked out Rothy’s and Birdies? Love them both! Looking forward to more blogs and scripture from you. Blessings in 2025!
I had to laugh at your “I officially give up” comment. I get it, some items just aren’t meant for everyone.
This is a great blog, wardrobe musts for women over 50! Love all your suggestions! Thank you!
Thank you for the inspiration to move on from all my old fashions. I think I was stuck in a rut and wanted new ideas to move forward as I get older. I like wearing t shirts but find my rolls on my tummy hard to hide. Also, do you recommend wearing a belt with pants and tucking in your shirts?
Kerry, I’m glad you are willing to get out of your comfort zone, but I want you to be confident in how you look. When it comes to wearing a belt or tucking in your shirt, it depends on the outfit. The dressier the look, you need a belt and a tucked shirt. If you are being casual, you can go without a belt, and you can either do a front tuck or wear the top untucked.
Yes to most of these! I have never embraced yoga pants, but perhaps paired with a long shirt or sweater I could try! Thanks for this list of must-haves — I am working on my closet…
I love yoga pants!
I love the patch pocket jeans from Loft that you recommend. Thanks for all of your efforts 👌
spot on!!
This article was chock full of great ideas and inspiration. Thank you, you make it easier to find outfits and accessories for everyone!
I agree with almost all of these except for the blazer and the pencil skirt. This body does NOT look good in either!!!! When you are petite, busty, have a bit of a tummy, and 5 ft. tall believe me your options are limited. In fact, many stores (at least in my area) have stopped carrying petites and that’s a travesty because there are a lot of us shorties in the world!!! I love the black and white Talbots argyle sweater…my favorite brand and favorite color combo:)
Cheri, it sounds like you might have to tweak the list a tiny bit for you.
Hello, I have been following your posts on Pintrest for years and have appreciated how you put your outfits together. Although I am almost 70, I do like to add a few trendy items every season to my wardrobe. I consider your posts a great place to look for ideas.
good evening, love this post. I was wondering if this also applies to women over 60?( going on sixtytwo in a fewdays, but i feel younger)also I am petite and thin, any advice on what may look good or bad? not everything goes well with a thin pair of legs(like a chunky heel.)
Of course it applies! I’m actually 63, so we are around the same age.
I find ballet shoes work for me with leggings
I like the look of that too. I wear Toms with mine as well.
Hi Tania, I am transitioning my wardrobe for retirement. You tips & pulled together looks help me how I want to present myself in this next stage of my life.
I loved the staples in your closet segment for women over 50.
I will be recommending to all my friends to read, watch and follow.
Excellent post! Great advice as always.
I am a new member…I am working on my wardrobe and I follow you for inspiration. I feel like we share similar choices…
Welcome!!! I’m so glad you stumbled onto my blog.
hi! I especially appreciate the Bible verses
This is good, thanks. I’m needing new sneakers. Have to check out sales.
Great checklist, thanks!
Love it!
What a post! Definitely saving this for reference! 💛
I have everything on your list except a Little Black Dress and that is next. Thanks for the list!
I love your list and agree whole heartily!
Good list; I have many of the items but the others do make sense to consider adding!
Love the list. I’m still looking for the perfect LBD.
Question…can you wear white jeans year round?
Yes, yes, and yes!!!
I’ve got the leggings and tee shirts covered! 😂 I probably need a skirt and a new white shirt!
Well, 2 of the items is better than none. 🤣
I love your choices and have everything but the LBD. Must go shopping!!
a great check list! thanks
I loved the 15 must haves for us gals over 50. Your shoes with the little black dress are beautiful. I love the dress you were wearing with the Jean jacket.
wonderful
I agree that every woman needs a good blazer. I’ve been searching for a navy blazer for two years, one that works for my “spring” coloring but doesn’t cost $800. Most are so dark they might as well be black. I’d love to know if anyone has found one!
Quince has the perfect navy blazer. It’s very reasonably priced and I’m a spring also.
Great post!!!
Great list and I actually have most of them, had to figure out which weren’t for me after a few years of trial and error. I so enjoy your blog and at 68 1/2 I am still wearing it all except for the blazer and anything beige!! You are wonderful, so glad I found you!!
What is best Jean to wear with sneakers. That is what I have to wear.
I was wondering when you order on line for Anne Taylor do the clothes come wrinkled? I have never ordered before
They come packaged like any store. It depends upon the fabric on how wrinkled things are.
Great list!
I don’t have a little black dress but wear black pants with very classy tops when the occasion calls for LBD!
Wow! thanks for all the tips!
Beautiful Spanx dress, especially the sleeves. Can never go wrong with a jeans jacket.
Tania, I love that you have items on all price points and I love your style too. Thank you.
Great list! I have them all but always get something out of every one of your posts. I would love to know where you got the tan sweater with the fringe!
Ahh, that was an old sweater I bought last year from Nordstrom.
Great list! I have most of these, but need to add a few more based on your suggestions. Thanks, Tania!
I agree. And a white tee that is not too thin or see through would be great. If it also is cut generous to hide a tummy, that would be fantastic.
Great suggestions! Now to try on my LBD!
I have three denim jackets in my closet. I just need to reach for them more often.
Hi Tania, Love the suggestions. I have most of them but will add the ones I don’t yet have. Thanks! Debbie
I need to buy LBD.
Hi, I love your blog! I love your style for us older ladies that still want to look hip and trendy. I would like to suggest a “similar to” option. I loved the Tory Burch handbag but no way I could afford a $398 handbag. Thank you for your consideration.
Linda, I try to do posts for all budgets. There are times when I link to $300+ handbags, and times when I link to bags around $20.
Thank you for sharing these items. I have most of them but do need to purchase a new LBD.
I had never found a white button down shirt that is flattering in me. I have a larger bust and the buttons always pull in the most unflattering way. I love the look of a button down shirt, though.
What a great, long list. I have most everything I think, except the trench coat and the button down white shirt. I haven’t found a need for those yet. I got a LBD from a previous post of yours.
This is a great list! I’m saving this post. Thank you!
I have everything and most in multiples. I gave away my little black dress. I have a navy dress for warm weather.
If it’s cold I have a black sweater dress. I might add that I rarely wear my trench coat even though I like it. I also don’t wear leggings unless to use them under pants on a really cold day. I prefer my sweatpants to work out and relax.
I love the list! Can’t go wrong with a good denim jacket! It’s one of my accessory pieces I wear often.
Great post! Loved everything. Great ideas for cleaning out my closet and starting a new year off smiling. Thank you.
Love this post, Tania. I just received a white denim jacket ordered on Amazon (with the gift card from my favorite blogger, by the way!). I have numerous jean jackets, too, but can’t resist another one. They’re just so versatile and look good with everything. Thanks for reminding us of these great basics. L
Woohoo!!! I love hearing that you got something fun with the gift card!
Great outfits.God doe hear us. all we have to do is peak to him and he’s there for u and he listens.
I’m missing a few of these items – looks like I need to hit up the mall!
I’ve got them all!
Disappointed that the Wrangler jeans jacket is unavailable in any color in large. I’ve been contemplating purchasing it since seeing it on your blog, but I suppose I’ve waited too long. Do you think Amazon will make it available again?
Nancy, don’t worry, that is a best seller and they will replenish.
You have made great suggestions! I have versions of all of these items, and they are the items I wear most.
I love that LBD and a great blazer! Nice list!
Such good suggestions to see where my wardrobe lacks. Thank you for your continued posting of bible verses. Most days I can relate and need them.
GREAT post!! I really like several of these items! I love that tan sweater with the (I think) it’s fringe on it. So cute!
Thanks for a great list! I’d also love some suggestions for short sleeve t shirts that have a little bit longer short sleeves. These days my upper arms are not my favorite body part!
I’m glad to see Cardigans made your list. I have several. I’m just not a Blazer person.
I have always thought of an LBD as only for funerals. This post reminded me it can be worn for other things. Enjoyed this post.
Oh, gracious! You can a black dress for almost any occasion.
this was a fantastic list. it was versatile for most lifestyles. thank you!! I’m always on the hunt for the one blazer that is flattering on my body and you gave some good options
I love a great black or navy blazer. They dress up almost everything, and look great with jeans.
I’m really glad to see Cardigans made your list. I have several that I wear. I’m just not a Blazer person.
Whew, that was a great post. Thank you for all the time you put in for us.
I’m golden on this one! in fact, I ordered that exact cashmere wrap from Quince and I absolutely LOVE it! Great post! Happy Monday❤❤❤
It is fabulous!!! I love Quince. They have such great items at a reasonable cost.
I totally agree with your list! All must haves.
Great post! I was pleasantly surprised to realize I had most of these items in my wardrobe. My most recent addition was a crisp, white button down and I don’t know why it took me so long. I love it!!
Wow what a great list this morning…..and I actually have a few of these in my closet and a few more I do need. Thank you
Great comprehensive list! Lots of good information.
Pretty dress with the lace (blue)
I love the first little black dress and it looks beautiful on you! Great list – thanks!
Such a good post. I enjoyed seeing how you styled the basics. Blessings…
Great timeless post! Love the nails❤️
Tania, this is the perfect list! Thanks for putting it together.
Great post! Lots of good ideas!
All good tips
Perfect post—- and, right on point!! Yes, we all need these clothing items!!
Everybody doesn’t need to wear leggings in public! They are great for yoga or gym classes, but let’s keep some things hidden.
Linda, maybe everyone doesn’t want to wear them in public, but some might. That is the great thing about fashion, we get to chose our own style.
Great list for a wardrobe!!
Great list!
