13 Fashions Women Over 50 Need In Their Closet

As a woman over 50, I know how important it is to have a wardrobe that is both comfortable and stylish. We all have our style, but there are a few classic fashions women over 50 need to consider having in their closets. These pieces can be mixed and matched to create a variety of looks for different occasions. Since they are classics, you can wear them for a long time.

Classic Fashions Women Over 50 Need

The Classic Little Black Dress (LBD)

Every woman should have at least one LBD in her wardrobe. This classic piece is versatile and can be dressed up or down for many occasions. For a dressed-up look, you could wear your LBD with heels and a statement necklace for a fancy dinner or wedding. For a more casual look, wear it with a cardigan and a pair of flats to church or a casual outing.

A Blazer Is A Fashion Item Every Woman Over 50 Needs In Their Closet

A blazer is a smart and stylish addition to any outfit. You could wear it with a pair of dress pants or a skirt and a blouse for a professional look at work, or dress it down by pairing it with jeans and a t-shirt for a casual outing. A blazer is a great way to add a touch of sophistication to any outfit and can be worn in any season.

Every Woman Over 50 Needs a Few Comfortable and Flattering Jeans

Jeans are a wardrobe staple that every woman over 50 should have. It’s important to find a pair that fits well and flatters your figure, as this will make them a go-to item in your wardrobe. You could wear your jeans with a sweater and a pair of boots for a casual look, or dress them up with a blouse, a belt, and a pair of heels for a night out. I’ve recently done two posts on jeans since they are such an important part of our wardrobe: What Are The Best Pairs of Women’s Jeans Under $50, and What Are The Best Jeans For Women Over 50

A Button-Up Shirt Is A Classic Fashion Women Need

A crisp white or blue button-down shirt is a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down and pairs well with just about anything. You could wear a button-up shirt with a pair of dress pants, a blazer, and heels for a professional look at work, or pair it with a skirt and sandals for a casual outing. A white or blue button-up shirt is a classic fashion women over 50 should have in their wardrobe.

A Classic Skirt is a Fashion Item Women Over 50 Need

Whether a pencil skirt or a knee-length A-line, every woman should have a classic skirt in her wardrobe. You could wear a classic skirt with a blouse, a belt, and a pair of heels for a professional look at work, or dress it down with a t-shirt and a pair of sneakers for a casual outing. Skirts are a feminine and stylish option that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

Comfortable and Stylish Shoes Are A Must For Women Over 50

It’s important to have a pair of comfortable and stylish shoes. Flats and sneakers are great for everyday wear, while pumps and boots can be dressed up for more formal occasions. When shopping for shoes, it’s important to find a pair that fits well and offers support. This will ensure that you can wear them comfortably for long periods of time. I posted about How To Find Cute Shoes When You Have Foot Issues and on Essential Winter Shoes for Women Over 50 if you want to check those out.

A Trench Coat Should Be In Every Woman Over 50’s Closet

A trench coat is a stylish and practical outer layer that can be worn in any season. You could wear it with a pair of jeans and a sweater for a casual look or a dress and heels for a more dressed-up occasion like a fancy dinner or a funeral. Trench coats are a classic and timeless piece that every woman should have in her wardrobe.

A Statement Necklace or Hoops

A statement necklace can add color or interest to any outfit. You could wear it with a plain blouse or dress to dress up your look for a night out or a special occasion or pair it with a sweater and jeans for a casual outing. Statement necklaces are a fun way to accessorize any outfit. However, if you rarely wear necklaces, try a pair of statement hoops instead.

A Scarf Adds Fun and Warmth

Scarves can add a splash of color or pattern to your outfit. You could wear it as a neck scarf, a head scarf, or tied around your bag for a pop of color. Scarves are especially useful in the colder months to keep you warm. There are so many styles of scarves to choose from, so you’re sure to find one that fits your style.

A Neutral Colored Handbag Should Be In A Woman Over 50 Closet

Every woman over 50 should have a neutral handbag that is both functional and stylish. A neutral-colored handbag, like black or brown, can be paired with just about anything and is perfect for everyday use. A bold-colored or statement bag can add a pop of interest to your outfit and is perfect for a special occasion. When shopping for a handbag, it’s important to consider its size and functionality. A larger bag may be more practical for everyday use, while a smaller one may be more suitable for formal occasions.

In addition to these classic pieces, there are a few other items that every woman over 50 should have in her wardrobe. These include:

Add A Cardigan or Sweater To Your Closet

A cardigan or sweater is a great layering piece that can be worn over a blouse or dress to add warmth and style. I wear sweaters 70% of the time in winter, and I love adding a cardigan to create a slimming effect. You can check out my Winter Sweaters To Add To Your Closet for Women Over 50 to see all the different sweaters available.

A Pair of White jeans (boot-cut, flare, or straight-leg)

I wear white jeans all year long. The “you can’t wear jeans after Labor Day” rule no longer exists so you can get more wear from your white jeans. You can pair them with brown or black booties in the winter months, sandals and tunic tops, or a white tank with a crisp navy jacket in warmer months. Some people make the mistake of wearing white panties with white jeans, but you should wear nude underwear, so they don’t show through the pants.

A Pair of Leggings or Yoga Pants

Leggings and yoga pants are comfortable and versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down. They’re perfect for running errands or working out, but they can also be dressed up with a sweater and boots for a casual outing.

I hope you enjoyed the 13 Fashions Women Over 50 Need In Their Closet. By including these classic pieces and a few other key items in your wardrobe, you’ll have a range of outfits to choose from for any occasion. Remember to wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident, and don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles and combinations to find what works best for you.

  1. love these ideas! can you do something for women who can only wear sneakers, and when I dress up, I wear a dress or nice pants, but no heels. what can I wear instead? thank you!

  2. I especially agree with the need for stylish and comfortable shoes. When I was in my 20s and 30s, I would hobble around in heels that were so uncomfortable just because I thought they looked great. Then I would suffer with pinched toes and blisters. Crazy! Then I discovered that you can actually find shoes that are both comfortable and stylish! Thanks for another great post.

  3. You have some wonderful ideas..I would like to know your dieting tips..thank you for the time you spend gathering all these great ideas..also, I know you mean no harm, but Joe probably feels embarrassed when you relate publicly the things he does that make you laugh.just so you know.

    1. Pamela, I would never tell a Joe story without getting his approval. He thought it was funny and didn’t care for me sharing. We’ve learned to not take things so seriously.

  4. This may be my favorite post! Thanks for all your great recommendations. As a clothes lover, transitioning from a professional wardrobe to a more casual one has been tricky. Your advice helped me pare down my closet. I could not have done it without you! 😊

  5. They have a fringe skirt very similar to the one you show here at WalMart for a fraction of the price. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

  6. Love all your post! I’ve got all the items you suggested except for a blazer. I’ve been looking for a good black blazer, just haven’t found what I want.

  7. Tania, you’re the best. Thanks to your posts, I have almost everything you have on your list.
I am plus size but the only problem I have is shoes (size 12 wide). Amazon helps. Please keep doing what you do. You help so many of us.

  8. I love this post! Great classic pieces!! Question this pale skin Minnesota girl is going to Florida for a formal wedding wearing a black dress is it too outdated to wear sheer black pantyhose??

    1. Sheer pantyhose are not outdated. SPANX has several styles, but be sure to size up. I bought a size D and they are TIGHT!

  9. Great post. I have a trench coat that I have had for probably 30 years. It is so versatile and has a warm lining that is great for winter and can be removed for warmer weather.

  10. I really enjoy your emails. I only wish you addressed designs for shapes & sizes. I’m terrible at fashion! That’s why I’m here. Some gals like me, are large chested and sweaters up to our necks are a no go! Or maybe overweight & the picture links you share with skinny models are not encouraging or offer vision. I at least know that v-necks are for big chests, but maybe touch on styles for shapes. Your style is fantastic. I wish it was teaching me the fashion for me. It’s an interesting post and good starting point.

  11. Thank you, great post. I have the white shirt from Chicos, it’s very nice. I used to wear lots of blazers years ago but quit and got rid of them. They are a good classic staple.

  12. It would be helpful to have all the items listed at the beginning or end as a recap.
I do believe I have many multiples of everything other than the trench coat. I need to still work on my closets and purging along with organizing, I find things I don’t even remember having.
    Great post Tania

  13. Love the black dress with the small ruffle on the shoulders (and purse). You are wearing it in the picture with the statement earrings and necklace. Where did you get them? Love love!

  14. Great post, Tania! I have many of these items in my closet, but should consider adding a couple more, like a blazer and a classic skirt.

  15. Thank you for showing all of us the outfits that should be in every woman’s closet, especially for women over 50. This was very helpful for me, especially the jeans.

  16. So glad for the help of fashion! I’m 65 and look forward for your blog each week.I love your style and spiritual wisdom to live by.I agree with all your choices for a classic wardrobe.Keep it going girl!!!

  17. Nice simple list that can make such a difference!

Thanks so much- I look forward to reading your post every day!

  18. Wonderful post, Tania! I have many of these pieces (ie LBDs for both warm and chilly seasons), scarves, and love my white jeans! But you always give me new ideas too. I have little need to wear skirts these days, but do love a great blazer to look put together at meetings at the non-profits where I volunteer!

  19. I really like the black dress with the flutter sleeves you have on to show the statement necklace. Do you have a link for it?

  20. You have a lot of good choices! Some of them I just fly by, since I live in Florida. You never need a trenchcoat here or scarves! I lost some weight and now I am buying Chicos no iron blouses! First time in a long time I can wear a button up blouse that does not gap at the bust. Also, I found lululemon Align yoga pants! great! I have figure flaws that make normal pants look terrible on me. The capris and shorts fit me really well. The material is so soft! I am amazed they fit so well. They are pricey, but worth it.

  21. I’m so glad I found you and this blog. Your looks are so inspiring and love that you show a price range for these outfits. I’m entertained with the “Joe stories”.

  22. Great post! I’ve been on the lookout for a LBD, but I can’t find one I like. I have so many cute cardigans and jackets I could wear with it if it was sleeveless.

  23. Hi Tania,
Poor Joe! But at least he is getting the truck fixed.
I think my favorite outfit in this blog is the plaid skirt, high boots and turtleneck. So stylish! I do have all the items you list except for the skirts. I really don’t go anywhere to wear a skirt. I usually pick a suit with pants if I go anywhere. My legs are never tan enough and I hate pantyhose.

  24. Thanks for the reminder on white jeans. I have a question so I hope you answer from here. When I’m looking at an item, going to the website, how do I get back to where I was without having to go back through from the beginning? Thanks!!

    1. Maria, it depends on what device you are using. On a laptop, you just click back on the window that contains the blog. If you are on your phone, you just hit the back button to return to the blog. I hope that helps.

      1. I look forward to your posts daily. I have changed the way I shop and organzie my closet thanks to your posts.

  25. These are all great wardrobe essentials. I’ve added the leopard scarf to my cart. No, I don’t need another scarf, but you can never have too many scarves. I also love the black fit and flare dress from Kohls. Thanks for all your work!

  26. Thanks for all these suggestions! I may invest in a pair of white jeans and a trench coat – two clothing items I have never had.

  27. That is a great post. I need to buy a button down and a trench coat. And I may “need” that beautiful Tory Burch purse! Thank You Tania

  28. Thank you for sharing all of these beautiful ideas! I especially appreciate the more economic styles! Have a great Wednesday!

  29. Great post today Tania. All items are classics that I do currently have in my closet. I love wearing skirts and the Talbots skirt is on my radar.

  30. Love this post! Everyone should have these basics! Just an FYI, you can also wear red panties with white pants. I dont understand how, but they dont show through…..😳🤷‍♀️

  31. You offered us great suggestions on how to wear the 13 closet essentials. I’m glad this wasn’t a test because my grade would be really bad. Poor Joe! I drive a 2016 Ram 1500 Hemi myself, so I get him not wanting to drive a car for an extended period of time. Hang in there, Joe!

  32. Love reading your posts! The white jeans and blazer will be pieces I add soon to my wardrobe. Thank you for the links!

  33. I have everything you listed and according to my husband I have way to much of what you listed.. lol. The only thing I do not wear is skirts. The dress is great! That is a dress that any shape and size can wear. God Bless.

  34. These are all lovely classics! I always love seeing updated classics and new ways to wear them! Thanks for the great list!

  35. Such a great blog with so many great ideas. I work from home and don’t need a ton of clothes but when I do go out I want to look cute and put together. Trying to avoid being baggy and frumpy!

  36. This is fantastic! Thanks so much for breaking down the best items for our closets. As always, your style is impeccable!

  37. Great post! I agree with all of your must haves…although I never reach for my trench coat! Have a great day…

  38. I have all of these items-now I need to make sure they fit and I love them-thanks for today’s blog-great information!!!

  39. Thank you showing us clothing we should all have in our closets. Showing us how to wear them for different occasions really helped me. Thanks again!

  40. I’ve gotten many of these on your behest! Thanks for all the great ideas. I actually have a plan winter skirt coming in the mail today. (Love your blog!)

  41. Great post. Each of the 13 items you listed are perfect for me. As a petite woman my search for clothes can sometimes be a challenge, but then shopping is a fun pastime. So each day I look forward to reading your post for the day.
