YOUR WORDS ARE POWERFUL

Do you know what one of the most powerful things on earth is? It is the power of WORDS. As a child I can remember saying over and over again the saying, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” I bet all of you can remember that little saying and I bet all of you know that it is not true. I bet that even when we were younger we even knew that it wasn’t true. In fact, we were probably saying that because someone had “hurt” us with their words and we were trying to “act” like it didn’t bother us. The truth is, words may not physically cut you so that you bleed, but they still have the power to do the same kind of damage. When you fall, stub your toe, or even break a bone, the amount of time to heal can be a matter of seconds to a matter of months. But, in most instances, you can recover and move on. But, an ill word can stick in your soul and you may never be able to move past it. And the worst part is…..it was probably not even true, but that doesn’t seem matter.

So, let’s look at words from a different perspective. If words can tear down and destroy, can they build up and create? Yes, they can!!! If you took two equally talented children and told one that they would never amount to anything and told the other that they were smart and they could do anything they wanted, which do you think would be the one most likely to achieve?

Are the words that come out of your mouth uplifting? I am not talking about the words that you say to others, I am talking about the words that you say to yourself. What if the words that you said would become a reality? Would you still say the same thing?

I am broke and I never have enough money. My marriage is on the rocks. My kids are driving me crazy. I am not pretty like you are. I am not smart enough to figure that out. I don’t have any friends. I can’t…..I won’t…..

The Lord created the entire world from words. He spoke it into existence.

Genesis 1:3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

What we speak out of our mouths HAS to be what we want the Lord to do in our lives. We can’t pray for one thing and then turn right around and say the opposite. We can’t go to church and ask for forgiveness and then continue to do the same actions. If you want blessings in your life then you have to have your thoughts, actions, and words all talking about that blessing.

I am going to try and remove the words that bring me down from my vocabulary. Instead of saying, “I can’t” or instead of saying “I don’t want” I am going to say, “I can with the help of the Lord”, “I want, but I need the Lord’s blessings to help me.”

Today is a fabulous day so use your words to be a blessing for someone, starting with yourself!

  3. Wow! This hit me hard this morning. Especially about going to church or praying and then continuing with same words and actions. It takes Him and me. Thank you for opening my eyes to that. Peace be with you today.

    1. I only talk about things that I struggle with myself, Johnna. I am trying to be more aware of what I speak into existence.

I am an advocate for folks in nursing homes and one of my roles is to educate staff and the community about respect, dignity, and elder abuse, among other topics. I keystone of my presentations has been about that saying, “sticks and stone may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” I explain it similarly to what you’ve said here. We carry deep wounds from what others have said to us, or we have said to ourselves and to others. It’s an important message. Thank you.

    1. Kathy, you are doing an amazing job. I am shocked at the number of people who are abusive to the elderly. Thank you for giving them a voice.

  7. I read the three other posts at the end of this one that were also on the subject of words. Wow, what a powerful message I have already gotten and I haven’t even got to church yet today. These are great. I have requested the book from the library that you spoke of by the title of Girl Wash Your Face. I am 34th in line waiting for the book so it must really be a good one. I will look into that app you talked about also which lets you listen to books. I am like you in that I listen to books on cd while on long car rides. Thank you for all of the good ideas you make available, they sure are helpful. You have a great day too.

    1. It is amazing the power that our words hold. They have the power to create or tear down. Yes, you will love the Girl Wash Your Face book. The app that I talked about is called Audible. You can download the app and listen to a lot of books for free. Amazon has a lot of free books or you can buy books for this app and download them to listen to as you travel.

  8. Uplifting words from an uplifting lady ?

  9. Loved this. It made me think of author Lysa Ter Keurst. Have you read any of her devotionals? One said are my words Kind, Necessary and True? We should think before we speak and lift people up!
