What To Do When You’re Living Life On Autopilot

How is it already November? I could swear I was celebrating a New Year only a few weeks ago. As I sat trying to remember what had happened during the year, I realized it was a whole lot of the same ole, same ole. Apparently, I’ve been living my life on autopilot.

Living life on autopilot

Going Through Life on Autopilot

The song by Dolly Parton came to mind when I started thinking about my daily routine.

Tumble out of bed and I stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
And yawn and stretch and try to come to life
Jump in the shower and the blood starts pumpin’
Out on the street, the traffic starts jumpin’
With folks like me on the job from nine to five

Let me apologize now since you’ll probably be singing that song for the rest of the day. Lol! My point is that it seems like every day, I do the same thing. Wake up, coffee, work, food, go to bed. There are a few moments that are sprinkled in to keep things interesting, but for most days, it is blah, blah, blah.

The Pros and Cons of Living Life on Autopilot

Living my life on autopilot has its advantages. I know when I’m getting up, how my day will look, and when it is finished, I have a nice soft bed. The problem with days like this is that they all run together. Time slips away from me, and before I know it, I’ve let life go on without me.

Routines also happen in my walk with the Lord. I’ve noticed that there are days when I read a few verses in the Bible out of habit, not out of desire. I post a Verse of the Day on my daily posts and in my emails, but I rarely take the time to meditate on the verse. My walk with the Lord has become blah, and I’m sure He has noticed.

They say that knowing what the problem is is half the battle. It sure feels like it is only the beginning of the battle. How do I change my walk with the Lord and keep it from running on autopilot?

Re-energizing Your Walk with the Lord

They say that knowing the problem is half the battle, but it sure feels like just the beginning. How do I break out of the rut and bring my walk with the Lord back to life? How do I get off autopilot and start truly living in each moment, especially when it comes to my faith?

Here’s what I’m learning: God desires a living, active relationship with us. He doesn’t want us just going through the motions; He wants our hearts, our minds, and our spirits fully engaged. The Bible gives us a few reminders of how to rekindle that passion and stay connected to Him.

Bible Verses to Refresh Our Faith

Romans 12:2 (NIV)
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

This verse reminds me that true transformation comes from allowing God to renew my mind. Maybe breaking out of autopilot starts with a fresh approach—setting aside intentional time to pray, read the Word, and let Him transform my heart and mind.

Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV)
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

This verse encourages me to approach each day with purpose. Instead of going through the motions, I want to remember that everything I do is for the Lord. When I approach life this way, even mundane tasks can become acts of worship.

Psalm 51:10-12 (NIV)
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”

David’s words remind me to ask God to renew my heart and restore the joy of my salvation. Sometimes, we need to invite God to stir up that passion again, to remind us of the excitement we once felt in our walk with Him.

Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV)
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

When we feel stuck, God is already working to make something new in us. He wants to lead us out of the rut and into a fresh experience with Him. This verse encourages me to let go of what’s routine and look forward to the new things God has planned.

A Call to Renew Our Walk with God

It’s okay if we find ourselves on autopilot from time to time, but God calls us to live fully and abundantly with Him. It starts with small changes—pausing to meditate on His Word, spending a few extra minutes in prayer, or just asking Him to reignite our passion. I don’t want to let the “blah, blah, blah” of life steal the joy of my faith, and I know He will meet me right where I am to help me rediscover that joy.

To GOD Goes the Glory

Have A Blessed Day

Let’s End with a Prayer

Lord, thank You for desiring a relationship with me that is real, active, and alive. Forgive me for the times I’ve gone on autopilot, drifting through life and my walk with You. Create in me a new heart, God, and restore the joy of my salvation. Show me how to break out of routine and seek You with my whole heart. Help me to live each day with purpose, for Your glory, and to remember that everything I do is for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  8. I have found after many years of struggling to “find time” that I do best if I just get up in the morning, make a cup of tea, and go visit my Lord. Granted I’m a grandmother now so it’s easier to do that but my point is that I made a set time and a habit to get me in my chair with my tea and my Bible. I’ve read the Bible front to back a number of times but recently realized I often didn’t retain what I just read (especially in the Old Testament) so I’ve started reading it out loud softly which helps me keep my focus and retain more with understanding. And I’m using the verses I read as prayer guides — there is so much to pray about as we read God’s word. Maybe this will be helpful to someone else. And I try to remember that God’s mercies are new every morning.

    1. I know this will be very helpful to everyone!
