Transitional Walmart Finds I Can Wear Now and Later This Spring
I know it’s January, and for most of us, spring feels very far away. But Joe has officially started his spring countdown. Every single day, without fail, he tells me how many days we have left until spring arrives. It’s like living with the world’s most optimistic weather app.
And somehow, his excitement rubbed off on me.
So even though I’m still wearing coats and real shoes, I’ve started thinking ahead. I’ve been picking up a few transitional pieces that work right now but will still make sense once the weather warms up. Think mid to lightweight layers, easy denim, and colors that feel a little more spring-like without being unrealistic for January.
That’s what this Walmart try-on is all about. These are affordable pieces that can be styled today with layers and worn again later without feeling out of season.
Relaxed Denim with a Polished Finish
This first outfit is the definition of everyday easy, with just enough structure to keep it from feeling sloppy.
The Sofia Vergara Relaxed Boyfriend Jeans are comfortable and lived-in right out of the gate. They have a mid-rise and a relaxed leg that feels casual but still intentional. That said, this one’s on me; I ordered the wrong size. I went with a 10, but I should have ordered an 8. If you’re between sizes or don’t want a very relaxed fit, sizing down is the way to go.
I paired the jeans with a striped sweater and layered on the Faux Wool Peacoat, which was hands down my favorite piece from this order. It has a really nice weight to it and honestly feels more expensive than it is. The structure instantly elevates the jeans and makes the whole outfit feel finished. This is one of those jackets you can throw on without thinking and still feel pulled together.
I finished the look with loafers and a large Woven Tote Bag, which keeps everything practical but polished. These items aren’t from Walmart; I like wearing different brands at the same time.
Why this outfit works
- Relaxed jeans balance out the structured peacoat
- The coat adds instant polish without feeling heavy
- Neutral accessories keep it timeless and wearable
Floral Quilted Jacket with Soft Layers
I really wanted this floral Quilted Jacket to work because the print is so pretty. It feels light and spring-ready, and I love the pattern paired with denim. Unfortunately, the length just didn’t work for me. At 5’6″, it hit a little too short and landed at an awkward spot on my torso.
The Fine Gauge Shell underneath is such a versatile piece. I love it, and it worked nicely as a layering piece. If you’re petite or like a slightly cropped look, both pieces could be great options.
The outfit itself is cute and easy, especially for early spring, but for my body and proportions, the length was the deal breaker.
Why this outfit almost worked
- Lightweight layers are great for transitional weather
- The floral print adds a fresh, spring feel
- Better suited for petites or those who prefer shorter tops
Ruffled Check Top with a Quilted Jacket
This one surprised me.
The ruffled check top isn’t really my style, but I liked it more than I expected. Sometimes that happens, and I always think it’s worth mentioning because we all get stuck in style ruts. The checks add interest, and the ruffle detail gives it a little personality without going overboard.
I layered it with the light blue quilted jacket, which really pulled the look together. What sold me on this jacket was the corduroy pockets. That little texture detail adds interest and keeps it from feeling flat or basic. It’s lightweight enough for now with layers and will be perfect once spring temperatures show up.
I finished the outfit with a Suede Belt, corridinating Leather Ballet Flat, and a simple Leather Shoulder Bag to keep everything cohesive.
Why this outfit works
- Pattern and texture add visual interest
- The quilted jacket makes it season-spanning
- Neutral accessories ground the look
What I’d Change (And What I’d Keep)
This is the honest part, because that’s always more helpful.
- I would absolutely reorder the jeans in a size 8. The relaxed fit is comfortable, but sizing down would give them a better shape on me.
- The peacoat is a keeper. No hesitation there. It’s a great weight and looks far more expensive than it is.
- Both the striped sweater and the floral quilted jacket were too short for my taste at my height, even though I liked them otherwise.
- The ruffled check top grew on me, even though it’s not something I’d normally reach for.
- The light blue quilted jacket is a great transitional piece, especially with the added texture from the corduroy pockets.
These are the kinds of pieces I like buying this time of year. They quietly hint at spring, instead of shouting it from a bullhorn. And honestly, when Joe announces “only 47 days left,” it helps to have something in the closet that feels like we’re already headed there.

4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
