Why in the world would fashion people name a purse “slouchy”? They could have gone with “Relaxed” or “Casual”. I’ll carry one but I may call it my “Slou-chic” purse, lol. The best slouchy, aka Hobo purses to elevate your style this season are the ones you can toss over your shoulder, fill with your wallet, lip gloss, readers, and even a snack for the grandkids, and STILL feel put-together.

Style Tips: How to Wear Slouchy or Hobo Handbags

Slouchy and hobo-style bags are wonderfully relaxed and versatile, but they can look a little too casual if you’re not careful. Here are a few simple tips to keep your look polished while still embracing that effortless vibe:

  • Balance structure with softness: If your outfit is already flowy or oversized (like a maxi dress or wide-leg pants), pair it with a slightly smaller or more structured slouchy bag. This keeps your overall silhouette from looking too loose.
  • Let the bag drape naturally: These bags are made to slouch! Don’t overfill them, and let them hang at your side or in the crook of your elbow. The relaxed shape adds movement and ease to your look.
  • Stick with neutral tones: Slouchy bags in tan, ivory, olive, or black are timeless and pair well with just about anything. They also elevate a casual shape and make it feel more intentional.
  • Mind the size: If you’re petite or have a smaller frame, a huge slouchy bag can overwhelm your outfit. Medium-sized hobo bags usually strike the perfect balance of roominess and proportion.
  • Dress it up with texture: Look for leather, suede, or woven materials to give your slouchy bag a little visual interest. A soft texture makes the relaxed shape feel elevated instead of sloppy.

Tania’s tip: “I love pairing a slouchy bag with tailored jeans and a structured blazer, it keeps the outfit from feeling too stiff but still looks put together.”

Slouchy Woven Tote for Summer

We all have our weaknesses, and handbags, totes, purses, or whatever you call them are mine. While some people don’t like switching all their “stuff” from one bag to another, I get a thrill each time. This woven tote gave me a thrill when I felt of it. I promise you, you’ve never felt a softer handbag in your life. And, it also comes with an equally soft clutch to hold some easy to find essentials like medicine, ink pens, lip balms and lipsticks, etc.

Recent Additions From Nordstrom

The next two photos are of a few slouchy, hobo purses I bought when I went to Nashville to shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. They are both sold out, but I’m still linking them because they might re-stock. Plus, I wanted to give you some style inspiration on handbags to look for.

FAQs About Slouchy and Hobo Handbags

Q: Are slouchy handbags just for casual outfits?
A: Not at all! While they do have a more relaxed shape, slouchy bags can look very chic when styled with polished outfits. It’s all about choosing quality materials and balancing your proportions.

Q: Do slouchy bags go out of style?
A: Slouchy bags are a classic. They may trend in and out of the spotlight, but the soft, unstructured style always finds its way back. They’re great for everyday use because they’re comfortable, flexible, and timeless.

Q: What’s the difference between a hobo bag and a slouchy bag?
A: A hobo bag usually has a crescent shape and a single strap. A slouchy bag can be any soft, flexible style that doesn’t hold a rigid shape, including hobo bags, bucket bags, and oversized totes.

Q: How do I keep a slouchy bag from looking sloppy?
A: Look for bags with subtle structure, like a defined base or quality stitching. Keep the contents minimal so it doesn’t bulge awkwardly, and pair it with more tailored clothing for contrast.

Q: Are slouchy bags good for women over 50?
A: Absolutely! They offer a softer, more forgiving shape that’s easy on the shoulders and practical for everyday life. Just aim for quality, neutral tones, and thoughtful styling, and they’ll look modern and effortless at any age.

When I was teaching we had pajama day during March Madness and I would end up wearing my pjs to all my errands, grocery store, post office, etc. not even realizing I was in them until I got home! I’m sure other teachers out there have done the same!
