The Best Jean Washes That Flatter Women Over 50 in Fall
You know I love my jeans. They’re one of the few things in my closet that never go out of style, and I bet most of you feel the same way. The cut, the rise, and especially the wash make a huge difference in how they look on us now.
The wash is what sets the tone. Some washes can slim and lengthen the leg, while others feel relaxed and casual. When fall rolls around, I find myself reaching for deeper, richer washes that match the season. I’m breaking down the washes I think every woman over 50 should have in her closet this fall, and why they work so well for us.

If you’re on the hunt for denim, you should read these posts next:
Dark Indigo Wash

If I had to pick just one pair of jeans for fall, it would be dark indigo. This deep, rich wash looks good on everyone and is slimming. These are the jeans I wear when I want to look a little more dressed up without trying too hard.

Classic Medium Blue Wash

Medium wash denim is the happy middle ground. It doesn’t feel as serious as indigo or black, but it also doesn’t lean as casual as a light wash. It has an approachable, easy-going vibe that works year after year.
They’re the jeans I reach for when I don’t want to overthink it. Fall colors like browns, tans, and oranges work next to medium blue denim.
Black Denim

Black jeans are in a category all their own. They’re not quite pants, not quite casual denim, but something in between. Over the years, I’ve noticed that when I don’t know what to wear, black denim often solves the problem. They’re seasonless in a way, but in fall, they take on a special role because they echo the darker, moodier side of the season.

Washed Black and Charcoal Gray

If deep black feels too sharp, washed black or charcoal gray denim is a wonderful alternative. These washes have a softened, almost smoky quality to them that looks cozy and relaxed without being sloppy.
I think of this wash as denim’s quiet achiever. It doesn’t scream for attention, but it offers something different from the usual blues and blacks. In fall, I always notice myself reaching for gray denim when I want a little variety but still want to stay neutral. It just feels like a softer way to lean into the season.
Vintage Faded Wash

I know some of you gurls still love a good faded jean, and I do too. Vintage-style washes have that worn-in look that feels comfortable and casual. The key here is choosing the right cut. A straight or wide-leg faded jean looks intentional and stylish, while skinny faded jeans can sometimes feel dated.
Colored Denim

Every now and then, I like to shake things up, and colored denim is the way to do it. Burgundy, olive green, and chocolate brown pop up in denim every fall. They may not be everyday basics, but they’re fun and add personality to a closet full of blues and blacks.
I won’t pretend I wear them constantly, but having one pair of colored denim tucked away gives me an option when I want to feel festive or just a little different. They’re the “why not” pair of jeans that make getting dressed more fun.
What Washes Are Most Flattering Over 50?
If you’re looking for the most universally flattering washes, go with dark indigo and black. These shades slim, lengthen, and always look modern. Medium wash comes in close behind because it has that easygoing feel without trying too hard.
White, ecru, and colored denim can be flattering too, but they do draw more attention.
What jean wash do you love most in the fall? Are you sticking with the classics, or do you like to mix in something unexpected? Let me know in the comments, gurls!

Love the charcoal jeans. They may be my next purchase
🙂
😊Jeans are my favorite to wear. Dress them up or go casual.
😃 always like the dark wash jeans.
🙂 I’d wear jeans everyday if that was possible. I like a darker wash. Sometimes dark-ish and others dark. I’d like a nice brown pair if I could find them in the right cut and price range.
I love all the jean choices. I am looking for a dark blue jean color that looks more on the dressy side. I have not found them yet. 😊
🙂 I truly love jeans, thank you for this information. So much to consider when buying a pair.
😊 I like the fringe bucket bag!
🙂 The grandkids grow up too fast! Once they start going to school, the time just flies by. 🙁 My favorite wash for jeans is dark, then medium.
Love black jeans but after a few washings, they start to fade at the seams. I do turn them inside out before I wash them. So every season, I need to buy a new pair! 🙂
☺️ I’m wearing mostly dark wash jeans although I have a little bit of everything.
