Standing out from the crowd can be hard, especially when you get to be a certain age. People tend to lump us all into the “over the hill” category, and what we wear is no longer cute, edgy, or relevant. Evidently, we are supposed to fade into the background once we hit 50, but I think that is BUNK! Nope, I’m not going to do it, and neither should you!!!

That doesn’t mean that we should have to wear crazy outfits in order to be noticed, although I’ve seen several VERY successful bloggers who have gone in that direction. I prefer to stand out from the crowd, but still look like an everyday person and not someone who dresses like the runway models at Fashion Week. Have you seen those outfits??? Who in the world wears those styles every day? Not me, that is for sure, and I’m guessing not you either since you follow my blog. Lol!!!

Color is one way that you can choose to stand out. Certain colors fade into the background and others grab attention. Neutrals tend to fade such as black, navy, gray, and shades of cream. Colors that stand out are vibrant such as red, emerald, cobalt, and yellow. Today, I am using a couple of different methods for standing out from the crowd, including my red cashmere turtleneck sweater.

I love wearing turtlenecks in the fall and winter, even though they showcase my extra chins more than other necklines. A v-neck is my favorite neckline most of the time, but I shy away from them more during cold months. I like wearing a turtleneck because it keeps my chest and neck warm, and that is important for someone who freezes all of the time.

I have this same cashmere turtleneck in several colors, and I wear them year after year. This sweater fits a tad bit relaxed, so even though I am wearing a medium, it still has room and isn’t too tight. The sweater is on sale for $40 off the retail price, so you might want to grab a couple for yourself or as Christmas gifts. Here are some other options for you if you can’t wear cashmere. The prices are about the same, but the material is different.

Another way that you can stand out from the crowd is by adding some bling to your look. I know that I will be wearing this red cashmere sweater during the holiday season, and adding the Jack Silver Statement earrings in charcoal gives me a festive vibe. These statement earrings will look great for any fancy event, and they look great when worn with black. Since these earrings create a statement by themselves, I didn’t add a necklace. But, these two would look great if you wanted to add a necklace.

Over 40 Fashion Blogger, Tania Stephens is wearing a red cashmere turtleneck and a pair of black and white printed lounge wide-leg pants

I bet you can guess what other way I am standing out from the crowd. These black and white printed wide-leg pants are definitely eye-catching. The lounge pants are silky and flowy, and they are very comfortable. The only drawback to these pants is that they are very lightweight and thin. I was afraid that you might be able to see through them, but once they were on, that wasn’t an issue.

I feel like these are the type of pants that you either love or hate, and there won’t be much middle ground. I’m in love with them, and I have already yanked the tag off of them and have them hanging in my closet. The pants make a HUGE statement and they are only $45, so I don’t care if they are something that I’ll only wear once or twice a year. Since they are lightweight and thin, you can wear them in the summer also. I am wearing a medium, and they are plenty roomy and fit me great.

I’ve had these black pointy-toed faux-suede boots since last year, and I am still loving them. The pointy toe elongates your legs, and I think they look great with ankle jeans. I am wearing my usual size 9, and they run true to size. The boots are also available in brown if you are needing that color instead.

This was one of my daughter’s crazy poses. Lol! I guess that since I am wearing crazy pants, a crazy pose was warranted. I can’t wait to hear what you think about this outfit. Would YOU wear it???

I didn’t get a lot of feedback regarding the giveaway, so this week will be the last one for now. I’ve missed commenting back to your comments, so after this week, we will go back to normal. I will probably do another one the week of Christmas, so be looking for that one.

I am 67 and would definitely wear the black and white print pants. The red looks great with them! I don’t want to dress like everybody else but I don’t want to look tacky either !

  2. Norah Alchian says:

Hi there I just came a cross your blog from 2021!!!
Do you have it for 2022/23?

  3. Thank you for your blog I truly enjoy it! You always look fabulous and so relatable. Your try-on outfits are so helpful to me. I just don’t get a true sense of wear on edited, compensated models. I don’t have a great sense of style or how to put outfits together so seeing fashion on relatable women is truly inspiring and most helpful. I hope you I have expressed my point so that you truly know how much this average woman appreciates your blog. Have a wonderful weekend!

I’m right there with you girl. I think that outfit is adorable!!!

  7. Diane+Schulert says:

I love those pants! It is a GREAT look!

  8. I love your classy look and would give anything to be able to wear those pants! I’m only 5’2” – petite and curvy so I’m limited in choices that add length and slenderness without needing to hem them at least 6-8”.

  9. Sassy and classy at the same time – you go gurl!!

  10. Great outfit but I think if I put those pants on, they’d be wearing me. You sure can pull them off.

  11. I would definitely wear the turtleneck and I love red…the pants are too wide leg and summer-y looking for me. I am only 5’4” and I think they might overwhelm me.

  12. I think you look great but I wouldn’t wear baggy pants. I am heaviest in my butt and leg area. And I don’t want to add any extra volume there. I love red though and just yesterday bought a red sweater for Christmas season! So right there with you about adding a stand out color.

  13. Tania, you look adorable in that outfit! I can’t pull it off as I live in AZ & run too hot for turtlenecks these days! I also look like a clown in pants like that as I am 5’10” w/very long skinny legs😂 I love pants, of course, so it’s a struggle finding the right ones in Talls. Merry Christmas and God bless!

  14. Yes! I would wear those pants! That whole outfit is sooo cute. I love things that are different and stand out from the crowd. The pants definitely do that.

  15. Now I know that I would never wear those pants…but you look so cute in that entire outfit. Love all your posts. Can u do eyebrows sometime…mine are sparse and look wonky when I try to use liner. HELP!!!

  16. Barbara K says:

Love the look! Red, white and black always look fabulous. The only thing missing was your sweet little Lu.

  17. Kathleen Kemp says:

    YOU LOOK ADORABLE!

  18. Katherine says:

    Hi Tania,
I love this outfit on you, I think you can pull off just about anything. The red turtleneck looks beautiful on you. The pants are fun, and a bit out there, but still cool looking.
Love your daughters pose, do more of them, look is so relaxed and just hanging out there. Yea for your daughter.

  19. Marcie W. says:

Beautiful outfit. Looks lovely on you.

  20. Cool outfit but don’t think I could pull off the look as well as you do. Love red with black & white.

  21. Gayle M Davis says:

    Love the outfit!!

  22. Sandra Grogan says:

    Love this look!!

  23. Edit Jeremias says:

I love your daughter’s crazy pose! Relaxed and modern

  24. I personally love this outfit! Not a fan of turtle necks (makes me too hot) but love the way it looks on you. Those wide-leg pants are great and I imagine very comfortable. I would definitely were them!

  25. Outfit is great. Bold and beautiful. So nice to see restraint in the jewelry. Sometimes,”less is more”

  26. Love that outfit. I really like the wide leg pants. The red sweater just makes the whole outfit pop.

  27. Yvonne Tanner says:

You look like you are having so much fun. Love your daughter’s choice for a pose! I can’t wear cashmere or wool but found some great mock turtlenecks at Chicos Off the Rack.

  28. Robin Stanley says:

You are so CUTE in this outfit!

  29. Love the look on you. I love red but tend not to wear it much for some reason. My youthful inner spirit would allow me to wear those pants, but my husband might disown me if I would wear them out in public. Lol.

  30. You look wonderful in this outfit . I also am a lover of red , but would wear darker in trousers & not synthetic.
Your posts make my day , buenas tardes del sur de España xx

  31. Yes, I would definitely wear this! The whole outfit is adorable and looks so good on you.

  32. Love the look on you. I’m to short to make it work for me.

  33. Tonya Robison says:

Gorgeous on you ! THAT RED IS YOUR COLOR!

  34. Rena Berowski says:

I love everything about this outfit! It is just fun and puts a smile on your face. I love seeing something unusual.

  35. Tania, I love this outfit on you! This is something I would wear if I were taller. The pants would drag the floor, unfortunately. Also, it’s difficult for me to find a red top or sweater that is a cool red (no orangey red for this cool toned girl), but if I find one I would definitely wear it. I love that you always encourage women over 50 to wear whatever we want!

  36. Ginger Dykes says:

I do love this outfit on you! Years ago (think 1980’s), I had a blouse with a print similar to the pants and I loved it! I finally got rid of it because it had the enormous should pads from way back when!!
Anyway, I think I would wear the pants with a different top in warmer weather. I love all your posts and the fashions you share with us. Keep it up, Sister! May Gold bless you and yours!

  37. Ginger Hiller says:

I missed when you asked for feedback about the weekly give always. I think that it is a very nice touch. Maybe once a month would be nice in 2022. While you look great in this outfit, it is not something I would wear since it doesn’t fit my personality.

  38. Tania, you are rocking those pants! The whole outfit looks great and fits your perky and fun personality. Love it!

  39. Really like the red sweater but wow the pants are a bit too loud for me. 😉

  40. Diana McDonagh says:

I love this outfit- particularly the pants! I would wear them.

  41. I AM IN LOVE with this outfit!!!!! I am meeting some schoolmates later on this month and I AM SOOO wearing this!!!

  42. Peggy Eaton says:

I definitely would wear it! I love the look of those pants and with the red sweater – I would have thought of black but the red is so much better!

  43. Kathleen McDermott says:

You look absolutely stunning. I’d notice you the second you walked into the room for all the right reasons. I don’t consider it too far out there. Just think of it as a swooshy long skirt that has legs in classic black and white in an eye-catching print! I think it is a fab party outfit for most women.

  44. Tania, you always look great! I love your style, and you challenge me to stretch my style and be more “fun” with what I wear. I love the red sweater, but I think the pants would be too much for me. I don’t have a lot of flowy pants, and I would probably start with a soft black – maybe with a bit of shine. That would still look fabulous with that red sweater. I just got really comfortable with skinny pants – I am having trouble moving back to loose ones in my mind. That’s why I love your blog – you show me how to look stylish with newer trends, without looking silly.

  45. Marin Mattingly says:

Love those pants! And the whole outfit is great. Going to the local Walmart to look for the boots. Thanks.

  46. Mary Ruth Harden says:

You look great in your choice of clothes to wear today! For some reason I’ve been shying away from red lately but you’ve inspired me to wear more red.

  47. Love the colors, the pattern, your accessories & MOST of all the “fun” pose that really shows your personality and looks like “real life”. It looks like you are enjoying yourself at a party with people you love.

  49. Love the look on you. Would be fun if you are having a party at your home.

  50. Cute outfit. Not sure I could do it. Would have to be the right occasion.

  51. Christine Simpson says:

I love the red turtle neck!! The color looks wonderful on you!

  52. Hi Tania, I think I would wear tights under the pants for more warmth. I think they look great on you, and any color of sweater would work fine. Let us know what kind of response you get.

  53. Elizabeth says:

You can really pull off this look! It looks great.

  54. Colleen Cavalieri says:

I love that outfit, especially the red sweater-that color looks great on you!

  55. Angela Dixon says:

Those pants are cute, but I am not sure I could do it. Although, I have worn flowered pants from Talbots! So maybe I should branch out!

    Keep up the good work.

  56. Holly Pickering says:

You look fabulous in this outfit! And, since you said the pants are thin, I could see them in the summer with a bold lime green tank or hot pink tee and super sexy black sandals! Yee-haw, you can rock this!

  57. mary williams says:

Love this outfit especially the pants. Might dress them up with a black sequined top

  58. Like the outfit too. It looks adorable on you, but not sure I could pull it off. Conservative me!

  59. Great article on staying relevant and enjoying all the parts of life. This is God’s calling to us. Clothes are a great way to honor the everyday!😀

  60. For sure!!! Actually I’ve worn something similar in the past! Love it!!!

  61. Tania, you always look so cute in any outfit that you wear. I am not crazy about the pants for myself but they looked so cute on you. I am definitely one of the women that does not stand out in the crowd. I feel that the older I have gotten they more I have disappeared into the crowd. Sorry didn’t won’t to be a downer on your cute outfit.

  62. Hi, Tania — I would likely wear those pants with a black sweater so they stand out even more! However, since they are light weight, I might not wear them until warmer weather hits. I definitely like classics with an edge. Who wants to look like everyone else? Not me! Thanks for all you do.

  63. Wow! Those pants..not for me, (I am very hippy), but they are fun!! Love the red sweater on you!

  64. I could not wear those pants. I have very short legs. The sweater is a Yes ! You look awesome in that outfit.!!

  65. Cheryll Sampson says:

The red sweater looks beautiful on you and is a good match for the pants. I wore such pants in the ‘70s, not sure I would go that way again, but they look nice on you.

  66. Vicki Lemine says:

Wish I had your fashion confidence! I could not wear the pants, but I think your fun personality wears them well.

  67. Diane Moore says:

A fantastic look for you. I might give it a try for the right occasion. It’s definitely a bold statement.

  68. Sarah Warfield says:

Love the outfit and the blog. I look forward to reading each post. I love your style and the posts help guide my return from full time sweats and yoga pants. But a big no to the new pose. Lol

  69. I really like the red sweater. With my white hair, I need color near my face.

  70. Jeanette Hayes says:

I would absolutely wear this outfit, especially the pants!!!!!

  71. Love Love Love the pants and sweater combo! Its bold but not completely over the top. Sometimes getting out of your comfort zone and trying new things is a good thing…and you wear it well!

  72. You look fantastic in this outfit! I have never been bold enough to wear patterned pants. Occasionally, I will wear a patterned skirt. But, I am trying to step out of my comfort zone. While shopping with friends this week, I purchased pants in the tiniest of black and white checks. Planning on wearing them with a red sweater.

  73. Love this outfit! The red sweater is beautiful!

  74. Love the bold, edgy look. You look like your ready to have some fun.

  75. Love this “stepping out of the box comfort zone” outfit!
It is a WOW outfit! I’m in my 70’s and I would wear it!

  76. Christine says:

Great outfit. So different and you really pulled it off.

  77. You are rocking that outfit. I love statement pieces and red is my favorite color. I like v-necks better year around so I wear lots of scarves when the weather turns colder.

  78. Ann H Pavlicek says:

Red is my happy color. It always puts me in a good mood. Oh, it was my power color to wear when I was teaching. Ha!

  79. Jennifer M says:

Love the pants! Red is a great color on you. Cute outfit.

  80. Patti Belew says:

The red and black are pretty!

  81. Love the red turtleneck

  82. Brenda Young says:

You look beautiful red and your outfit looks adorable on you. I need your confidence. Haha! Sometimes I feel self conscious or if I do stand out I’ll go the other way and think I’m something that I’m not. I’m crazy.

  83. Kelly Brooks says:

Love love love the whole outfit you look great. I would wear in a second.

  84. Regina Cocolin says:

    You look great in these!

  85. Love, love, love the outfit. If the pants were not wide legged, I would definitely buy them…I am too short to wear that style. You look stunning.

  86. Kathy Almonte says:

Hi Tania! That outfit is perfect on you! Also I love the fun poses your daughter got you to try:). You can see the joy she brings out in you when she’s behind the camera enjoy the outfit and thank you for showing us so many different trends.

  87. Katy crannell says:

Love the lounge pants! Great outfit

  88. Cute on you but I would not wear the pants. WAY too far out of my comfort zone….and I have no place to wear them. Thanks for showing fun options, though!

  89. Oh yes, I would wear that but in the Summer because my legs get cold easily. Love the red turtleneck but I’d still go for vee neck. I have beginning of a turkey neck and turtle neck emphasizes that. But the pants are so fun. You look terrific!

  90. I am not a fan of turtle neck sweaters. I generally wear v necks and have a few cowl collar necklines too. I have a pair of wide leg pants and generally wear them in the summer with tank tops or a fitted t shirt. Love the red top and the printed pants black and white combination. Will have to see what I can duplicate it with from my closet.

  91. Love that look Tania Love love the wide leg Tania just got 3 pairs myself animal print leather pleats and black !

  92. Christine F says:

I LOVE this outfit. You look so so chic
