Spring Fashion for Petite Women: Breaking the “Petite Rules” with Stephanie’s Belk Try-Ons
Do you ever feel like being petite puts you in a style “box”? I hear from so many of you who feel like you have to avoid certain trends, like maxi dresses or cropped pants, because you’re worried they’ll overwhelm your frame. Well, my daughter-in-law Stephanie is here to debunk those myths!
Stephanie is 5’3”, so she’s technically in the petite category, but she has such a knack for picking out pieces that flatter her height without staying stuck in a “petite-only” section. She recently went on a little shopping excursion to Belk and found some absolute gems.
Spring Fashion for Petite Women: Stephanie’s Belk Try-On Haul
I know you all love seeing outfits on a real person instead of just a product photo, so Stephanie filmed quick videos of each look so you can see how everything moves and fits on a petite frame.
Today, we’re looking at her six favorite pieces so you can see exactly why they work so well, even if you’re on the shorter side.
The Perfect Pop of Green: Smocked Ruffles & Cropped White Denim
Stephanie hit it out of the park with this first look. When she sent me the video, I immediately thought, “My petite readers are going to love this one.”
She picked out this darling mint green top that has the most beautiful A-line shape. If you’re worried about tops feeling too boxy, an A-line cut is your best friend because it flares out just enough to be flattering on basically every body type. Stephanie mentioned it has that “smocked” elastic through the neck and sleeves, which gives it a beautiful textured look without feeling tight. It’s a “regular” size small, and she says you could even size down if you wanted a closer fit, but the length is just right for hitting at the hip.
She paired the top with these white, Cropped Jeans that have the cutest ruffle detail at the bottom. Now, I know some petite ladies are scared of a “crop,” but look at where these hit her; they’re a fantastic length that shows off the ankle.
One thing Stephanie wanted to make sure I told you: these are a mid-to-low rise, so she recommends sizing up if you want a bit more wiggle room in the waist. The ruffles at the hem add just enough weight to the bottom of the look to balance out those fluttery sleeves.
The “Not a Dress Girl” Alternative: Poplin and Scalloped Eyelet
If you aren’t much of a dress person, don’t worry, Stephanie found the perfect “middle ground” look. She picked out this gorgeous green and pink lattice-print top that actually comes in the same fabric as some of the dresses she saw, which is such a smart way to get that high-end boutique look while staying in your comfort zone.
What she really loved about this poplin top, besides the functioning fabric buttons, is the sleeve detail. Even though the neckline is a bit lower, the sleeves sit perfectly, so you don’t feel like you’re constantly adjusting or showing too much skin.
She paired the top with white pull-on Pants with an Eyelet Hem that are a total game-changer for comfort because of the elastic waist. The star of the show here is the bottom of the leg; it has this delicate eyelet detail and a scalloped hem that just screams spring.
Stephanie mentioned that while her normal size fits great, she’d actually suggest sizing up one in these white pants just to make sure the back pockets don’t show through too much, a classic white denim struggle we’ve all had! To finish it off, she grabbed these white Bow Sandals that have a matching eyelet texture, which ties the whole feminine look together.
The Effortless Shirt Dress: Kelly Green Pinstripes
If you’re looking for that one “easy” piece to throw on and go, Stephanie found a real winner with this Kelly green pinstripe shirt dress. It’s 100% cotton, so it feels incredibly soft and light against the skin, exactly what we want when the weather starts to warm up, but we still want to look pulled together. One of the things that makes this dress feel special is the way the fabric changes direction on the sleeves, which adds a little extra visual interest to a classic silhouette.
The crisp collar and functioning buttons give it a polished vibe that can easily be dressed up for a luncheon or down for a Saturday morning at the farmers market. For my petite friends who are worried about a midi length overwhelming them, take a look at where this hits Stephanie. It lands right in that “sweet spot” between the knee and the ankle, which actually helps elongate her 5’3” frame rather than cutting it off. She’s wearing a small and says it’s very true to size, with a relaxed fit that’s meant to be comfortable, not clingy.
The Comfy-Cool Knit: Details That Matter
If you’re a “plain style” kind of girl, Stephanie found a dress that is going to be your new best friend. It’s a soft Pintuck Knit Dress that’s basically pajamas in disguise, but it has the beautiful pintuck details on the sleeves and bottom that make it look so much more elevated. Stephanie pointed out that it has a drawstring waist, which is a total win for us petite ladies because you can cinch it exactly where you need to to create a shape, rather than letting a t-shirt dress just hang off you.
It’s the ultimate “errand-running” dress because it has pockets and just pulls right over your head. She styled it with these really unique Thea Sandals that have incredible detail on the straps. She was raving about how comfortable they are, and since they’re a neutral tan, they help keep the leg line looking long, even though the dress hits right at the knee. It’s a simple look, but the textures make it look like you put in way more effort than you actually did!
Tropical Punch: Bold Prints for Small Frames
Stephanie fell in love with this vibrant pineapple-and-fern print dress, and it looks like a lot of other people did too, since the white variation is sold out! Don’t worry, though, the navy version is just as pretty!!!
A lot of petite women are told to avoid big, bright prints, but the A-line silhouette of this shirt dress keeps it from being overwhelming. It has a really neat collar that leads into a row of buttons and a tie-waist, which gives it a really feminine structure.
What I love about Stephanie’s advice here is her focus on the movement; the wider sleeves and the way the skirt flows make it feel breezy rather than restrictive. She paired it with white eyelet Bow Sandals that actually have some padding in them, which is a must if you’re going to be on your feet. The white of the shoes pulls out the lighter colors in the tropical print, making the whole look feel fresh and intentional from head to toe.
The “Rule-Breaking” Maxi: Sunshine Yellow and Embroidery
We saved the most stunning look for last! This butter-yellow maxi dress with white embroidery is exactly the kind of piece people say petite women “can’t” wear, but Stephanie looks absolutely radiant in it. It’s an easy, slip-over-the-head style with an elastic waist that does all the work for you. She did mention that because the fabric is light and airy, you’ll definitely want to grab a slip to wear underneath it.
Now, for the height “problem”, Stephanie admitted the length is a little long for a petite frame, but she found the perfect solution! She paired it with these “Beartrap” wedges that are apparently so light it feels like you’re wearing nothing at all. That little bit of height from the wedge is just enough to keep the hem off the ground without making her feel like she’s walking on stilts. It’s a great reminder that with the right pair of shoes, no dress is off-limits!
One More Thing on Petite Styling
I hope seeing Stephanie try these pieces encourages you to step outside the little “petite style box” we sometimes put ourselves in. Sometimes it just takes seeing something on someone your height to realize a trend can work beautifully. Whether it’s a midi dress that hits just right or a bold maxi paired with the perfect wedge, there are no hard and fast rules! The most important thing is finding pieces that make you feel comfortable and confident in your own skin.
