IT’S INTERESTING HOW WE TRY TO TAKE THINGS INTO OUR OWN HANDS
Have you been watching The Chosen series? Last year, I was introduced to this series based on the New Testament and the life of Jesus. It is an incredibly well-written and acted series, and you will find yourself identifying with the characters. This series has brought people in the Bible to life that I have read about for years but never thought about them as real people.
Season two has eight episodes, and the finale is airing tonight. I think there is supposed to be a total of 7 or 8 seasons, so there are many videos still to come. I recently watched episode 7, and there were a few things that stood out to me. I don’t want to talk too much about the episode since some of you might be planning on watching it later.
However, in this episode, his followers were concerned because Jesus was brought in for questioning by the Roman government. Before Jesus went with the soldiers, He told all of them that He would be back, for them not to be afraid and to keep on planning for the Sermon on the Mount.
The people who had been following Jesus were normal, just like you and me. They weren’t “special” in the eyes of anyone except Jesus. He could see in their hearts, and He wasn’t concerned with their outward appearance. They had doubts and fears even though they were walking beside Jesus every day.
So, in this episode, the first thing His followers started to do was worry. They argued over whether Jesus really meant that He would be coming back and what He meant when he told them not to fear. Some decided to take Jesus at His word and wait and watch for His return. Others decided to go after Him in the hopes of trying to help Him out of the situation.
Upon His return (yes, He comes back), Jesus asks them, “didn’t I tell you that I would be coming back and not to worry?” This really stood out to me because I do the same thing. I might read that I am not supposed to be afraid in a Bible verse, but I wonder if He was really talking to me.
Isaiah 41:10
10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
The Lord might have been talking to the Israelites here, but was He also talking to me? Did He only mean this to pertain to this exact situation? Since I am in the Lord’s family, does that mean that His words here also pertain to my life now?
John 14:27
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
Did Jesus also mean these words for me? These words were spoken to His disciples before His death, but since I am a follower, are these words also for me?
How many of us read Jesus’ words, but don’t really take them to heart. If we truly believed that His words were meant for us, would we fear or worry ever enter our hearts?
For me, the reason that I let fear and worry into my life is that I can’t “see” what Jesus is doing. I wonder, “does He know what is going on?” Even if I think that He knows what is happening, I worry that He won’t do anything about it. Or I worry about the outcome and that it won’t be the one that I want.
Then, like some of the followers in episode 7, I try and help Jesus out. Really??? Does Jesus need help? We all know that Jesus does not need anyone’s help. What we are really doing is trying to “steer” Jesus into doing our bidding. We want to get the results that we want and not leave them to His will.
Psalms 130:5
5 I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on him. I have put my hope in his word.
Even though David might have been penned these words, I think that they are also meant for us. Put your hope in the Lord, and count on Him, not your own abilities.

Linda, I know that the entire first season is on YouTube. Just search for The Chosen.
Thank you!
We are so fortunate to have the Bible to read, hear and see the “big picture” and “ whole story.” Those in Jesus’ time could not imagine the ending of the storyline and it was so it was hard to trust and believe. Lucky for us we do know the whole story, so why not believe? Have not watched series but will try to find. Thanks
