Who says that you have to look like a man or a lumberjack when you wear plaid? Lol! I’m not sure if anyone actually says that, but the Brawny paper towel guy comes to my mind a lot when I think about wearing plaid. It doesn’t happen if I am wearing plaid in the spring or summer, but come fall, the image of a lumberjack pops into my mind.

WAYS TO WEAR PLAID AND NOT LOOK MANLY:

Add Jewelry

Yes, I know that men wear jewelry also, but the type of jewelry I am talking about is more feminine than they would wear. I love adding a necklace or large earrings to my plaid looks. Think pearls, tassels, or statement pieces, basically anything that is feminine.

Wear on the bottom

Since the Brawny man always wore a flannel shirt, you can knock that image out of your head by adding plaid on your bottom half instead.

Ponte knit pants are a great way to add plaid to your wardrobe without looking manly. Knit pants will show your shape and curves, and those vary greatly from a man’s. Lol!

Don’t go oversized

This one is harder these days since everything is oversized and boxy. But, just because a shirt is oversized, you don’t have to wear it that way. You can tuck your shirt in for a slimmer look, you can do a half-tuck to get the same effect, or you can tie it as I have in this photo. All of those suggestions will show your shape, and that is what we are after.

Add a Feminine Touch

When it comes to plaid, you don’t have to wear the Brawny man’s colors. He wore black and red, which is the colors I wore above, but choosing more feminine colors can help with keeping you from looking manly. Or, another way to keep your plaid shirts from looking too manly is by feminine details. Ruffles are trending, and I’ve seen lots of plaid shirts with ruffles that are super cute.

I started this look with a layering piece. I decided to go with a lighter neutral color so that it matched my boots. This tank was something that I already had, but I’ll find some that are similar for you. I bought this one from Chico’s a couple of years ago, and I liked it enough to buy it in several colors.

Y’all, I love this plaid moto jacket!!! I hesitated to order it at first, but it kept gnawing at me, so I finally gave in and placed the order. Oh, my word!!! I am so glad that I did. This is the perfect fall jacket, in my humble opinion. When I look at it, I see fall. I think that the orange stripe in the plaid makes this jacket a standout for me.

The jacket is a nice weight, and all of the hardware is nice and sturdy. For those who pay close attention to the stripes…look, they match. I am wearing a medium in the jacket, and it fits me nicely. I even zipped it up to make sure that it would. Lol! This is a classic moto jacket, but it has an updated and modern look with a plaid pattern. Small details like this are what keep you looking modern and current!

Look at these jeans. Would you guess that they are pull-on jeans??? When I took them out of the bag, I kept trying to unbutton them because they looked so realistic. They have belt loops, working pockets that aren’t stitched closed, and the button looks like it is actually through a buttonhole.

I have been so impressed with these pull-on jeans, and this makes my second style in them. The first pair was the Eloise jeans that I am wearing in the photo below. Both jeans run true to size, and I am wearing a size 10 or 30, depending on how the retailer offers them.

These are bootcut jeans, but I have a large cuff on them so that you can see my neutral-colored espadrilles.

Here is a view that shows you the length of the plaid moto-jacket. It hits me right at my hips, and I think it looks great.

Now, let’s talk about these boots. You will not find another pair of boots this cute, genuine cowskin leather, faux-fleece fur for under $30.00! Yep, UNDER $30.00! I was blown away when I opened the package and saw how nice they looked. I kept sending snapshots of all of the boots I ordered to my DIL, saying, “can you believe this?”

The leather boots have a lug sole, which is very popular right now, and that will be great this winter. I like having this type of sole to help keep me from slipping around on snow and ice. I think these have the faux-fur lining on the inside too, so they are warm and toasty. I am wearing my usual size 9, so they run TTS.

Well, I decided to change things up just a tad. I only changed out the tank and boots, but I think the outfit looks completely different. This time I went with a darker top to show you how the color changes everything. And, I couldn’t wait to show you another pair of boots that I just got, but these are tall boots.

This is a cashmere sweater that I bought last year. I always make sure to purchase cashmere when I catch it on sale because I love the feel of these sweaters. This one was by Everlane, and I love the way this one fits. It is long-sleeved, but the jacket still fits me well with the sweater on. Here are a few other cashmere sweaters in a similar color.

These boots are a little more expensive than the others, but not a whole lot. They are a tad more dressy, and I love all of the faux-fur touches peeking out. These faux-suede knee boots also have the lug sole that is so popular and great for winter. They are also lined with the faux-fur, but only to the ankle bone; the footbed is not lined. I am wearing my usual size 9, so they run TTS.

Now, for the icing on the cake, let’s talk about my jewelry. I think that everything that I have on is something that you’ve seen me wear before. These are some of my favorites, and they are my go-to items when I am heading out of the door. Hoop earrings, cross 18 kt gold-vermeil necklace, Ryder multi-chain necklace, David Urman bracelet.
