How to Style Classic Black and White Outfits for Summer That Feel Fresh at Any Age
I remember going to an event thinking I looked sharp, head to toe in something I’d carefully planned. Then this woman walked in wearing the simplest outfit: a pair of crisp white dress pants and a black blouse. No trendy patterns, no bold jewelry, just two classic pieces. There was something about her look that stuck with me. It was clean, confident, and understated in the best way. Five years later, I still think about it.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a good pop of color. But in the summer, all the bright shades and neons can feel a little loud. When I want something effortless and elegant, I go back to black and white. It’s timeless, it works in every season, and best of all, it always looks put-together.
So today, I’m sharing easy ways to wear black and white outfits in the summer that are anything but boring. Whether you love preppy pieces, printed sets, or classic white pants, these outfits will help you stay cool and polished, without sacrificing style.
Tips for Wearing Black and White Outfits in Summer
Black and White with a Preppy Vibe

Let’s start with this classic combo. This outfit has a fresh, preppy vibe that reminds me of something you’d wear on an afternoon stroll by the marina. The black V-neck cable knit pullover has just enough texture to keep things interesting without feeling heavy. It’s soft, lightweight, and drapes nicely—plus, the short sleeves offer a little arm coverage without making you overheat.
The white walking shorts are one of those summer staples I reach for often. They have a nice tailored look and hit at a length that feels modest but still modern. I appreciate that they’re structured without being stiff, and they work whether you’re heading out to lunch or just want to feel pulled together for a regular day around town.
To keep the look grounded and comfortable, I went with my Sperry boat shoes. They’re classic, comfortable for walking, and add a bit of polish. A simple straw clutch brings in a summery touch and keeps the outfit feeling fresh.
Why It Works for Us:
- It’s a classic combination that looks timeless at any age
- The pullover gives a bit of arm coverage while staying lightweight
- White shorts are crisp and flattering, not clingy or sheer
- The boat shoes are comfortable enough for all-day wear
Look for Black and White Prints

Wearing black and white doesn’t mean you have to stick to solid pieces. Prints are a wonderful way to add personality to your outfit, and this vest does just that. The pointelle knit pattern gives it texture and lightness, almost like built-in air conditioning on a warm day. It’s sleeveless, so it’s perfect for layering or wearing alone, and it gives your outfit a stylish twist without being over the top.
The high-rise shorts are soft and flattering, with a length that’s comfortable and age-appropriate, although they might be a tad too short for some. They feel secure at the waist without being tight, and the subtle A-line cut is forgiving around the thighs. If you’re like me and appreciate shorts that look tailored but still move with you, these are a solid pick.
Clarks wedges are always a go-to when I want a little height without sacrificing comfort. These give me the lift I want with cushioning that keeps my feet happy, even if I’m on them for a while. The jewelry and structured bucket bag help finish the look with a little polish, but nothing feels too fussy.
Why It Works for Us:
- Wedges offer height without sacrificing comfort
- Black and white prints add visual interest without being busy
- The vest offers breathability and texture, great for layering
- The shorts provide structure while staying soft and wearable
Embrace White Pants (They’re More Versatile Than You Think)

White pants are one of those pieces that can feel intimidating until you find the right pair, and then you wonder how you ever lived without them. This wide-leg crop style is especially flattering. It doesn’t cling, it moves easily, and the thicker fabric helps prevent any worries about see-through spots. I always recommend wearing nude undergarments, just to be safe.
I paired these with a black and white checked sleeveless blouse. It buttons up the front and has a slightly relaxed fit, so it feels easy and polished all at once. The print keeps things interesting, and the sleeveless cut is great for staying cool, even on humid days.
To round out the look, I grabbed a woven tote (which fits everything from a water bottle to my laptop) and some neutral slide sandals. These are the kind of pieces that work on repeat all summer, whether you’re heading to the grocery store, grabbing coffee with a friend, or just wanting to look nice for yourself at home.
Why It Works for Us:
- Wide-leg pants skim the body without clinging, creating a flattering silhouette
- The fabric is thick enough to feel confident and covered
- The button-up top adds structure but feels soft and breathable
- It’s a look that can go almost anywhere, and you’ll stay cool doing it
Try Color Blocking With a Bold Contrast
If prints aren’t your style, you can still make a statement with black and white. Color blocking, pairing solid black and white pieces side-by-side, creates a clean, modern look without needing patterns. The strong contrast draws the eye and instantly looks polished.
You might try a black top tucked into white pants, or a white tunic with black trousers. Dresses with built-in color blocking are also a great way to get this look with very little styling needed. It’s one of those combinations that feels fresh and intentional, even if you’re just reaching into your closet.
Why It Works for Us:
- It feels timeless but still has a current edge
- No pattern mixing required, just crisp, clean contrast
- Creates a slimming effect with vertical lines and high contrast
- Easy to accessorize with silver, gold, or natural textures
Start With All White, Then Add Black Accents

Wearing all white might feel intimidating, but don’t rule it out. Starting with a clean white base, like a dress, or matching pants and top, and adding small touches of black gives you that classic black-and-white feel in a lighter, summer-friendly way.
I love this look because it feels crisp and cool, especially on sunny days. Adding black sandals, a black belt, or a structured black bag keeps the outfit grounded without weighing it down. And if black near your face feels too harsh, this is a great way to keep the balance while letting the white take center stage.
Try:
- White cropped jeans + white blouse + black sandals
- White shirt dress + black belt + black bag
- White tank + white linen shorts + black slide sandals and a black watch
Why It Works for Us:
- White reflects heat, so it’s ideal for warm-weather dressing
- Black accessories feel grounding and elevate simple looks
- It’s an easy way to wear black and white without feeling weighed down
- Great for anyone who avoids wearing black near the face

I will be searching for you, not AI. I do not trust AI. It’s called ‘artificial’ because it’s fake.
Not a fan of AI trying to replace online influencers. I hope to continue receiving your daily emails so I can click directly on your “real” blogs…. Love today’s blog about black & white outfits. I always feel preppy & classy when I wear my sleeveless black & white gingham check Crown & Ivy top from Belk with white ankle jeans and black Jack Rogers sandals. Classic combo!
Jackie, I appreciate you loyalty!
😊 I do not relate to the AI image at all. I love that you are so real and honest in your posts and that is a quality that cannot be replaced!
Great suggestions. 😊
Love black and white especially in linen during the summer. Your email about AI true. There’s a YouTube video by a French stylist. She said there’s a lot of AI fashion videos and taking away from real fashion YouTubers. She encouraged women to follow real women and told how to tell if it’s AI. The AI one never show a woman but you just hear a voice. I’ve accidentally watched some and was not impressed. Sometimes they show dated fashion.
😀 boo to AI. It can’t be human! It has no emotion and no way to feel fabrics and how things fit. That’s terrible.
😊 I get so aggravated when I search something on my phone and the first thing to come up is an explanation from AI. I purposely do not click on it. I know there are many wonderful things about AI, and I’m sure that in the days and years to come we’ll have less choice about opting in or out, but for now I doing my best NOT to jump in.
I think that black and white check button front top is fabulous. And it’s currently on sale!!
I try to not look at the AI answer either. But, there are a lot of people who now use Chat instead of Google, so they never even see my posts.
