Does the Devil Need an Invitation Into Your Life?

I know it’s been years since the Twilight books and movies were all the rage, but stick with me here. In those stories, a vampire couldn’t enter your home unless you gave them permission. That little detail got me thinking, does the devil work the same way? Can he only gain access to our hearts, minds, and homes if we extend an invitation?

A Dream That Made Me Think Twice

One night after praying, I decided to take things a step further. I spoke out loud and told the devil he was not welcome in my home and needed to leave immediately. Later, I dreamed of a battle where the devil was trying to pull me one way while the Lord was pulling me the other. It shook me, but I woke up grateful that, even in my dream, the Lord won.

That dream reminded me that spiritual battles are real.

Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Does the Devil Really Need an Invitation?

I once asked a Sunday school teacher about my “invitation theory,” and she said something that stuck with me: the devil doesn’t usually just snatch us up out of nowhere. He’s subtle. He tricks, deceives, and waits for us to crack the door open.

It doesn’t always take something dramatic. A lie (even a “small” one), gossip, jealousy, pride, or bitterness; those everyday sins can be the open doors he’s waiting for.

1 Peter 5:8 (NIV)
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

The Good News: We Have Hope

Here’s the truth: every single one of us sins. But because Jesus died for us, we don’t have to stay stuck there. When we repent with a sincere heart, God not only forgives us, He erases our sin completely.

Isaiah 43:25 (NIV)
25 “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.

Stand Firm and Shut the Door

Whether or not the devil “needs” an invitation, one thing is certain: we don’t have to accept his.

James 4:7 (NIV)
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

So when temptation comes knocking, speak truth over it. Pray, worship, and tell the devil he is not welcome.

To GOD Goes The Glory

Have A Blessed Day

Let’s End With a Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that we are never fighting alone. Help me to recognize the subtle ways the enemy tries to slip into my life, and give me the strength to shut the door firmly in his face. Teach me to resist temptation, to lean on Your Word, and to rest in the truth that Jesus has already won the battle. May my heart and home always remain a place where You are welcome. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

It’s took me all week to take time to read this. Now I know why! Lord help us to fight these battles on our knees.

With all the bad that we see happening in the world these days, I think the evil one is in plain sight and no longer hides in wait for us. We must be constantly in prayer and in the word!
    Thank you for your message!

  3. Thank you for the commentary on not inviting the devil in. We have been having similar sermons at my church so it’s really made me aware of making sure the devil is not in my life! Honestly I think in many small ways (and sometimes large ones, too) we have to fight it every day.
