Ask, Seek, Knock: Inviting God Into Every Area of Your Life

A Timely Reminder from Matthew 7:8

What a perfect time to share this story. My devotional this morning was on Matthew 7:8, and wouldn’t you know, it reminded me of a time when God taught me this very lesson in the sweetest way. It’s funny how He’ll use little moments to bring His Word to life, just when we need it most.

Matthew 7:7-8 (NIV)
⁷ “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. ⁸ For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

These comforting words from Jesus are part of the Sermon on the Mount. They’re simple, yet deeply powerful instructions on how to draw closer to God. Let’s take a closer look.

Ask

To ask means to request or seek an answer. Straightforward enough, right? But here’s what stands out to me: asking is an act of humility. When I ask the Lord for help, whether it’s wisdom, healing, strength, or direction, I’m admitting that I can’t do it on my own.

God doesn’t roll His eyes when we bring Him our needs. He delights in hearing from us. Whether you’re asking for guidance with a big decision or peace for a restless heart, He’s listening.

Seek

Seeking is active. It means moving forward in faith while keeping our eyes on Him. If I’ve asked for wisdom, I should seek it in Scripture. If I’ve asked for healing, I can seek the doctors, counselors, or resources He places in my path.

Sometimes, the act of seeking is what changes us. God may not answer right away, but He often uses the process to prepare our hearts for what’s ahead.

Knock

Knocking means persistence. It’s the spiritual version of saying, “Lord, I’m here, and I’m serious.” When someone comes to your front door, you don’t open it unless they knock or ring the bell. The same goes for our faith life; sometimes, we need to knock boldly, not timidly, to show that we truly desire His presence and guidance.

Now for my little story.

Earlier this year, I lost a pair of sunglasses that I loved. I tore the house apart, checking every drawer, every car, every purse, nothing. I eventually convinced myself they must’ve been left in the car we sold last December.

Then, a couple of months ago, I lost my AirPods. They were in a bright red silicone case, which should have made them easy to find, but they seemed to have vanished into thin air. After searching high and low for weeks, I finally gave up and decided I’d need to buy another pair.

Fast-forward to last week. I was packing for a quick trip and grabbed a black handbag I hadn’t used in a while. When I picked it up, I thought it felt heavier than it should have been. So, I looked inside and found a few items I had left in it from last year. When I checked the side pocket, there were my sunglasses! You should have heard me shouting and seen me dancing around like a crazy person.

I kept loading my car, but this time I had a little pep in my step. It didn’t take long to fill up the tailgate area, so I opened the back door to tuck in a few more things. In the panel of the back door, there are two small storage slots, one long and one shaped for a drink. I noticed two unopened water bottles sitting there, and when I reached down to remove one, I saw something red. I picked up the bottle, and there were my AirPods, still in their bright red silicone case!

Can you see this? Did I shout for joy?! You better believe it! I’m sure my neighbors wondered what on earth was going on as I stood in the driveway yelling, “Thank You, LORD!!!”

It wasn’t just about the lost items. It was a gentle reminder that God cares about every part of our lives, not just the big things. When we ask, seek, and knock, even about something as small as misplaced sunglasses or AirPods, He listens. Sometimes, He just waits for the perfect moment to reveal the answer.

Applying It to Everyday Life

God didn’t limit what we can ask for or when we can come to Him. He wants to be involved in every detail of our lives, from our biggest heartbreaks to the smallest annoyances. The key is to keep asking, keep seeking, and keep knocking, because each one draws us closer to His heart.

Even when it feels like the door stays closed longer than we’d like, remember, He hears every prayer. He answers in His time, not ours, and His timing is always perfect.

I believe that the Lord was laughing as I danced around and praised Him. I believe that as our Heavenly Father, He delights in giving us gifts and being a part of our everyday, mundane lives. So, invite the Lord into EVERY thing that you do!

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding us that we can come to You with anything and everything. Teach us to ask with faith, to seek with purpose, and to knock with persistence. Help us trust Your timing, even when the answers seem delayed. We know that every door You open leads to Your best for us.
