We all knew it was coming, but I’m never ready for it. I’m talking about the official first day of winter! I like looking for the silver lining in all situations, so here is my silver lining for today. The first day of winter, or the winter solstice, is the shortest day of the year. So, every day after day will have more sunlight than the day before! Woohoo! Now that winter is officially here; it is time to work on our winter capsule wardrobe.

WHAT IS A WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE?

Capsule wardrobes are a term used for small or minimalistic wardrobes where items mix together easily to create many outfits. A winter capsule wardrobe would be mostly comprised of clothing worn in the winter months. The goal is to streamline your wardrobe, which helps to take the guesswork out of choosing an outfit. When starting a capsule wardrobe, you will first need to go through your existing closet and decide what goes and what stays. If you need help with this process, then check out this post on how to clean and organize your closet.

HOW TO BUILD A WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE?

Building a winter capsule wardrobe is a great excuse to go through your closet. The New Year is soon approaching, so taking this time to clean out your closet will have you entering 2023 like a champ. See what you currently have in your closet that will work for your capsule wardrobe, and decide what to keep, donate, or put away for later. You may find that you don’t need to buy anything, but maybe tweak how you’ve been wearing what you already own.

WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE ESSENTIALS

There will always be exceptions to every list, depending on the climate where you live. Your height, body type, and personal style will also dictate the clothing you might need, but here’s a great list to start with for your Winter Capsule Wardrobe essentials:

WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE SWEATERS

I wear sweaters more than anything in the winter months. When building a capsule wardrobe, I would suggest starting with solid colors. It is also easier to wear sweaters with neutral colors, but if you are a fan of patterns, don’t be afraid to include them. I recently purchased this Floral Cashmere Sweater since I knew it would work for winter and spring, and I love the pattern.

Black Cashmere Hoodie (large – just ordered another one in camel and a red one in med). I love this hoodie since it can be worn casually but looks elegant and chic.

WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE COATS & JACKETS

I love coats and jackets and keep adding more to my collections. Lol! I love a good deal, but here is where you might want to invest in a coat that will last you for years. Look for classics that you won’t go out of style, and you will get your money’s worth from them.

WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE BOTTOMS

Every winter capsule wardrobe needs a good pair of well-fitting jeans! There are a lot of styles to choose from, but I think a great bootcut pair is flattering for most women. You’ll also need leggings and joggers to round out your wardrobe, but you’ll hear more about that in upcoming blog posts.

Joe’s Jeans Bootcut Jeans – Size 31 – I think they run small, so I recommend sizing up one size.

WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE TOPS

I usually wear sweaters in the winter, but when I wear tops, they are generally for layering. I stick to thinner fabrics that can be layered under a sweater or cardigan. Here are a few examples of layering tops.

WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE SHOES

Boots, sneakers, and flats in neutral colors that can be worn with all your outfits are what you should look for. I’m wearing a pair of block-heeled boots in the popular western style that works for all my longer jeans. I’ll have an upcoming post on winter shoes showing you lots of options, so be on the lookout for that post. I suggest starting with black, brown, or navy shoes since they are the most versatile.

WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE ACCESSORIES

Here is where you can let your personality shine! Think about scarves, brooches, earrings, necklaces, or kimonos and ruanas; those are all excellent ways to add fun and personality to your capsule winter wardrobe.

WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE DRESSES

I don’t wear as many dresses in the winter, but it is a good idea to have a couple on hand just in case you need one. If I’m wearing a dress, I will probably wear tights with it. I just ordered a couple of pairs from Sheertex since they are supposed to be almost indestructible. I’m excited to try them out since I get a run in my tights every time I put a pair on.

This covers the basics of a winter capsule wardrobe. You probably already have many of these items in your wardrobe and won’t need every piece I’ve included in this capsule. Use this as a checklist, and then you can start to expand the wardrobe with patterns, prints, and accessories.
