My Favorite Affordable Retailers for Stylish Clothes Over 50
Yesterday I shared a post about how to look stylish on a budget, and so many of you said it really resonated. With the way prices have been creeping up everywhere, I think most of us are paying a lot more attention to what we’re spending on clothing.
A few years ago, I did a poll asking how much women were comfortable spending on different items. While the exact numbers have probably shifted a little since then, the overall takeaway was still pretty clear.
Most women like to keep everyday clothing purchases somewhere in the $50 to $100 range. Tops and sweaters usually stay toward the lower end of that range, while items like jeans, sneakers, coats, and handbags are where many of us are willing to spend a little more.
And honestly, that makes sense. Those are the pieces we tend to wear over and over again.
The trick is finding retailers that offer a good balance of style, quality, and reasonable prices. Over the years, I’ve discovered several stores that consistently deliver that balance, and these are the ones I find myself returning to again and again.
What Makes a Retailer Truly Affordable?
When people talk about affordable retailers, the answers can vary quite a bit.
Some women consider retailers like Talbots or Nordstrom affordable because they shop the sales and know how to find good deals. Others think of those same stores as higher-end brands.
To me, affordability isn’t just about the lowest price. It’s about value.
Affordable clothing should still look good, fit well, and hold up long enough to make the purchase worthwhile. A $20 shirt that falls apart after two washes isn’t really a bargain.
The retailers below are ones where I’ve consistently found pieces that balance price, style, and quality in a way that makes sense for everyday wardrobes.
J.Crew Factory:
J.Crew Factory has become one of my favorite places to shop for affordable classics. The style feels very similar to J.Crew, but the prices are much easier to justify.
I especially like their sweaters, button-up shirts, and casual jackets. They tend to have a polished look that works well for everyday outfits without feeling overly trendy.
One of the things I appreciate most is that their pieces mix easily with items you already own. A simple striped shirt or cardigan from J.Crew Factory can work with jeans, trousers, skirts, or even layered under a blazer.
Nordstrom:
Nordstrom might surprise some people on an affordable list, but if you shop it strategically, it can be a fantastic place to find reasonably priced clothing.
One of the easiest ways to shop at Nordstrom is by brand. I often look for brands like BP., Caslon, Halogen, CeCe, and Vince Camuto when I want stylish pieces at a more accessible price point.
Another huge benefit is their free shipping and free returns. Being able to try things on at home with your own shoes and accessories makes shopping so much easier.
And when you’re unsure about sizing, that return policy is a lifesaver.
Nordstrom Rack
Nordstrom Rack deserves its own mention because it can be an incredible place to find deals if you’re willing to browse a little.
You can often find the same brands sold at Nordstrom for significantly less. The selection can be hit or miss, but when you find something good, it can feel like striking gold.
Shoes, handbags, and denim are especially good categories to check there.
Quince
Quince is one of the newer retailers I’ve started sharing more often, and many of you have told me you’ve started shopping there, too.
What makes Quince interesting is that they focus on high-quality basics at more reasonable prices. Instead of trendy pieces, they specialize in things like cashmere sweaters, linen shirts, washable silk tops, and classic denim.
The quality tends to feel much higher than the price point suggests, which is why it has quickly become one of my favorite places to look for wardrobe staples.
If you’re someone who prefers timeless pieces that you can wear for several years, Quince is definitely worth exploring.
Amazon
Amazon has become one of the biggest retailers in the world, and it has also grown into a surprisingly good place to find affordable clothing.
The selection can feel overwhelming, so I usually rely heavily on reviews before purchasing anything.
Amazon is especially useful for things like casual dresses, lounge sets, workout clothing, and everyday basics.
It may take a little digging, but you can definitely find some great pieces there.
Old Navy:
They consistently offer casual basics, denim, and layering pieces at prices that are easy to work into most budgets.
Their sales are frequent, and if you catch the right promotion, you can find some really good deals.
You do have to watch the quality occasionally, especially with thinner cotton pieces, but overall it’s still one of the easiest places to build a casual wardrobe without overspending.
Target:
Target continues to be one of the easiest places to find stylish clothing at very affordable prices.
When I shop Target online, I usually go straight to the brands I know work for me. My favorites include A New Day, Universal Thread, and Shade and Stone.
I’ve found great basic tees, casual sweaters, and everyday jeans there over the years.
That said, Target is one of those places where I pay a little extra attention to quality. Some pieces hold up beautifully, while others are better suited for seasonal trends.
Talbots, Chico’s, and J.Jill
Talbots, Chico’s, and J.Jill are retailers that deserve a special mention because their clothing is designed with mature women in mind.
While their regular prices may be higher than some of the other stores on this list, they frequently run excellent sales that make their clothing much more accessible.
The fit, quality, and attention to detail often make their pieces worth considering, especially if you find them during one of those sales.
When clothing fits well and holds up over time, the cost per wear can end up being very reasonable.
A Final Thought on Affordable Fashion
Looking stylish doesn’t mean you need to constantly buy new clothes or spend a fortune on your wardrobe.
Sometimes it simply means knowing where to shop, when to shop sales, and how to mix the pieces you already own.
Over time, I’ve learned that the goal isn’t to find the cheapest clothing possible. It’s to find pieces that look great, feel good, and fit comfortably into your budget.
When you find retailers that consistently deliver that balance, getting dressed becomes a lot easier.
And I’d love to hear from you. What affordable retailers do you find yourself shopping at the most lately?

Hello Tania!
Thank you for sharing so much with us gurls. Your knowledge of fashion absolutely comes to aid all of the time. I appreciate that your ideas are for all shapes and sizes. I’ve been following your posts for five years which has made my cancer journey a little easier.
Wearing the clothes I choose for the day help forget about the battle I’m fighting. Thanks for keeping it real!
This was an awesome post and I’m sure you put in hours of research on it! Looks like for the majority of ladies, these retail/outlet stores (J. Crew factory, Target, Old Navy and Chico) are the place to shop. Unfortunately I have found that for me (an over 60 / 5’10 / full figured gal), these just don’t work. And of course, that is speaking for me personally! The fit/style/length are never quite “right”. I have found occasional pieces at our Chico’s Outlet store that do work, but it’s rare. Not to say that I don’t love these posts! I get wonderful ideas here! I love the way you put your outfits together – I admire each and every one! 60 is not old, either – lol – but for some of us, we have to really look harder! Be blessed today!
Shirley, I’m a shorty (5’4”) but I’ve a good friend who is your height and extremely busty (40 DDD) and she loves Chico’s. She’s a XL in all tops, avoids button ups ( me too as a 34 DDD since they gap at the bust) and she buys Riders jeans since they are long enough. Riders are at Amazon plus stores. Keep trying.
Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate the suggestions and will check those out. 🙂
Shirley, l am a plus size blogger. I do not shop those stores. I recommend Eloquii, Nordstrom Rack, Torrid, Lane Bryant, ASOS, Modcloth, and several others.
Thank you for a very helpful post, and for “keeping it real”! It was a brilliant move to poll your followers. I think your desire to be truly helpful to us exceeds any of the other bloggers I follow, and I appreciate that. As I have aged, (67 years old), I have come to realize that spending excessively on clothes is a sad waste of money. Styles change, tastes change, and there are sooo m!ny other good uses for the money. I sometimes look at my closet and cringe thinking of how much I have spent on clothes, shoes, and bags(especially bags🤣). Perhaps this comes from reaching this age in these times, I don’t know, but I do know that I am no longer willing to pay what I once did for staying stylish. I have also come to realize that it is not REQUIRED to spend a lot to be stylish. You seem to be of the same mindset and that is why I follow you. Keep up the good work.
Ditto! Great post! Thanks bunches
I love seeing the looks you put together. It is so helpful! I’m a little older than you but I can still imagine wearing everything you post. I love that you include a Bible verse. Thank you for that. I look forward to seeing all you have in store for us this Spring.
This kind of post is a great idea! Taking a poll first and sharing those results was a smart move. Love the details you’ve included for each retailer, such as your favorite brands. Thanks!
It was very interesting to see what people say about fashion.
Thank you, Tania! This is a very helpful post!
I’m glad that the post is helpful.
I have ordered items from Stein and I have to say the quality has been surprisingly good. I’ve gotten several bathing suits, a couple of sun dresses and two of those fuzzy teddy sweatshirts for my granddaughter , all good . Prices of course are amazing. I do read a ton of reviews before I order.
I just placed an order for a few things. They are definitely geared more toward young skinny girls. 🤣
Love this post!
Thanks so much!
This is very encouraging Tania. Thanks for sharing these affordable sites. I also shop all of these. Have a great day-I think Spring is around the corner.
Linnie, I sure hope you’re right and that Spring is right around the corner.
