I am sure that almost every one of you has probably read a fortune from a fortune cookie. But, just in case you haven’t, it is a crisp small cookie that is usually served after a meal at a Chinese restaurant and inside you will find a piece of paper that contains a small written “fortune” for you. The fortune in the cookie is usually better than the cookie itself, and most of the time, the cookie might go uneaten.

There are some silly games that you can play when you read your fortune. You add a phrase on to the end of the fortune, and one of the most popular phrases is “in bed.” Here is an example of a fortune that I posted on my Facebook back in August 2018; “You will profit soon from an investment opportunity” … “in bed.” I know, it doesn’t make any sense, but it can be hilarious sometimes.

I had Psalm 136 as my Bible study devotion the other day, and I just sat there in awe. I loved that all the glory is given to the Lord and that He is due our praise. When the Psalmist adds, “His love is eternal” to the end of every statement, it reminded me of the fortune cookie, and how we should be continuing to do this today.

Psalm 136

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.
        His love is eternal.
Give thanks to the God of gods.
        His love is eternal.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords.
        His love is eternal.
He alone does great wonders.
        His love is eternal.
He made the heavens skillfully.
        His love is eternal.
He spread the land on the waters.
        His love is eternal.
He made the great lights:
        His love is eternal.
the sun to rule by day,
        His love is eternal.
the moon and stars to rule by night.
        His love is eternal.
10 He struck the firstborn of the Egyptians
        His love is eternal.
11 and brought Israel out from among them
        His love is eternal.
12 with a strong hand and outstretched arm.
        His love is eternal.
13 He divided the Red Sea
        His love is eternal.
14 and led Israel through,
        His love is eternal.
15 but hurled Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea.
        His love is eternal.
16 He led His people in the wilderness.
        His love is eternal.
17 He struck down great kings
        His love is eternal.
18 and slaughtered famous kings—
        His love is eternal.
19 Sihon king of the Amorites
        His love is eternal.
20 and Og king of Bashan—
        His love is eternal.
21 and gave their land as an inheritance,
        His love is eternal.
22 an inheritance to Israel His servant.
        His love is eternal.
23 He remembered us in our humiliation
        His love is eternal.
24 and rescued us from our foes.
        His love is eternal.
25 He gives food to every creature.
        His love is eternal.
26 Give thanks to the God of heaven!
        His love is eternal.

What if we added “His love is eternal” after everything that was happening in our week? The baby is crying, and I am ready to pull my hair out, “His love is eternal.” I just wrecked the car, “His love is eternal.” I lost my job, “His love is eternal.” Would that change your thought pattern? Would you start to realize that whatever is happening around you can be handled, because the Lord is with you and His love is eternal?

I hope that knowing that the Lord’s love is eternal (lasting or existing forever; without end or beginning) gives you as much peace as it does me. Nothing you can ever do or ever say will take away His love…IT IS ETERNAL.

Have A Blessed Day!

  1. What a wonderful way to remind ourselves….His love is eternal!! Would make for an excellent experiment to add that after everything that happens just in one day!! Bet our whole perspective would change if we’re having a bad day and what a great way to Praise God!! Thanks Tania!

Sondra, I would love to try that experiment for just one day. I agree with you, how could you stay negative with the knowledge that His love is eternal?

  2. Struggling in my work area today. Will say his love is eternal when negativity enters my mind. Thank you for giving us coping skills that remind us our Heavenly Father is always with us. Enjoy your blog so much.

Connie, I hope your work gets better. But, yes, His love is eternal, and that alone should make your day MUCH better.

  3. Excellent post! I will start using those words today. God Bless you Tania!

I am not sure that I had read the verse before either. But, it really touched me once I did.

  4. This is a wonderful post. There is a southern gospel song that has a title that I say to myself when things get rough. “The God on the mountain is still God in the Valley” that helps me get through but for everyday problems to repeat his love is eternal is such an uplifting thing to say. Thank you.

I find myself singing songs of praise in situations also. They are comforting.

Thank you for your words of encouragement. I know if my thoughts are worthy, but I trust in His message.

  7. Love this! Thank you, Tania! (I just learned about the fortune cookie game from my sister about a week ago–hilarious!!!)

I am glad that you liked the post. I went to the Chinese restaurant this afternoon, and I couldn’t help but laugh.

I do subscribe to Proverbs 31, but that is not where I saw the verse. I received a devotional/journal from a reader back over a year ago. I loved that one, so I ordered another one from the same author. I am now doing Write The Word and I am doing the Cultivate Gratitude version. The one that I did previously was Trust. I found mine on Amazon.

  8. What a beautiful post. I’ve never read that entire scripture like that. I’m going to remember that His love is eternal. Or at least I’ll try. And it’s ok if I forget sometimes because ..His love is eternal. 😊
