Mentally, physically, and emotionally drained. That is how I would describe myself after a week spent with my son and his family. I am also feeling extremely loved, thankful, and blessed. How many of you can relate to me?

I think about Christmas time and how much fun I have watching everyone open all of their presents. The weeks and weeks of shopping for gifts and the endless wrapping after that are forgotten for those few minutes of bliss. Then the cooking of the meals, and the cleaning up of all of the torn wrapping paper and empty boxes, soon put us back into the drained status.

It is time for a long rest, and it is not just for our physical body, it is also for our mental health. When you are tired and exhausted, you can’t think straight. You can’t remember what you are working on, or even what you have already accomplished. Yesterday morning when I woke up, I started cleaning up the kitchen. I had already fed the dog, but I hadn’t fed the cat yet. I had a pan that had some burned crust in the pan, so I added water and dish soap to the pan, and then set it on the stove to come to a rolling boil. (the boiling soapy water makes clean up much easier) I remembered that the cate needed feeding, so I left the stove and walked into another room to feed the cat. I had utterly forgotten the pan, and when I walked back into the room, Joe was already calling for me, and he was trying to clean up the mess. The soapy water had become hot suds which overflowed the pan, leaving me with a nasty mess. None of that would have happened if I hadn’t been trying to multi-task, and if I hadn’t been so tired.

I bet almost every one of you reading this post have taken a vacation thinking only about getting some rest and relaxation. But, you spend so much time running around trying to have fun and do everything that you can, you come home exhausted and in need of more rest than when you left for vacation. You need a vacation from your vacation.

The Lord knew that we needed rest to replenish our bodies and our souls. God created man on the 6th day and on the 7th day He rested. So, before man even got too busy, he had a day of rest.

Genesis 1:26-27 and Genesis 2:2

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.

How can we relax? There are kids to feed, work that needs to be done, laundry piles that aren’t going to wash themselves, and scores of other duties that go on and on and on. We often say, “How can I relax knowing that all of those things need to be done?” What we need to be asking ourselves instead is, “If I rest for thirty minutes, will all of those things still be waiting for me? Can I do the work then? Will I even do the work better after I have rested?”

One website that I was looking at said that 72 verses in the Bible mentioned rest. I don’t know if that is accurate, but I do know that “rest or rested” is used a lot in the Bible.

Jeremiah 31:25

25 I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.”

Exodus 33:14

14 The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Mark 6:31

31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

Today, take a few minutes to replenish yourself mentally, physically, emotionally, and most importantly; spiritually.

Have A Blessed Day!

  1. Oh my goodness! That sounds just like something I would do, Tania! Thanks for the reminder to enjoy a little downtown. I’m hoping for a little reading by the pool later today, if this crazy Florida weather will cooperate. If it doesn’t, I will read by the front window and watch it rain! Have a great, RELAXING day 🙂

My grandkids stayed with me last week. My house is a mess and I feel like I ran two marathons. Thanks for sharing the word. I’m 58 and reasonably fit. Don’t know why I am so tired. LOL

JoAnn, I know how you feel. Why should the little activity I did make me so tired?

  3. This post is so me today. The past few weeks have been non-stop. The more I tried to do it seemed the less I got done because I was so overwhelmed I couldn’t focus. I had to step back and rest. Rest my mind and body. It’s amazing what that can do for you. Even if a few things don’t get done it’s not the end of the world I’ve discovered. And I’m not failing at work or home life because I didn’t get a specific task done. I’m learning how to take a day at a time and a task at a time. Once I did that I actually accomplished more. The scriptures were an encouragement too. God knows we need rest so we can accomplish our goals and taking time away from daily chores to read His word helps us refresh our minds & souls. It’s worth every minute we do it because with rest and His words in our heart we can accomplish anything.

I am not sure why I feel guilty for taking some time for myself, but I do.

  4. Oh, this gives me all the “feels”. I try to make everyone’s life easier and perfect and forget about myself. Thank you Tania! I’m going to go sit and do nothing for a little while…until I think someone might need my help. Ha!
