Today is Easter Sunday! Today is when a lot of households will be celebrating that Jesus rose from the grave to give us a chance at eternal life. It is also a day where a great number of people only know this as a day to hunt eggs, eat chocolate rabbit candy left by the “Easter Bunny,” and go to grandma’s house for dinner.

This is the time of year when I start to feel inadequate and undeserving. I look at my own children and wonder at the sacrifice that was made for us. How God gave his son so that we can live. How humbling is that? There is no way we could ever be worthy of the amazing grace that our Lord has bestowed upon us. I can only imagine how mad I would be if I had been the one who sacrificed so much for so many who are completely unappreciative. I can only imagine how mad I would be if I was the one being sacrificed.

Honestly, how could we ever be adequate of such a sacrifice? How could we ever do enough to be deserving of the ultimate gift? The truth is that we can’t. We could never “earn” or “work” our way into heaven. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t do everything possible to do good works.

What are some of the good works we can do? We can give of our time. This might mean visiting those who are lonely or sick. It could also include volunteering and helping in the community and in your church. We can help those in need. Feeding the hungry, clothing those who have lost everything in a fire, maybe just babysitting for a couple who are overwhelmed. There are lots of organizations that do good deeds and you can contribute monetary funds to do your small part.

However, none of these will earn a place in heaven. We are told to Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. We are told to Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.

As a Christian, we want our light to shine for the Lord. Doing good deeds or good works might not earn our way into Heaven but I think it does shine a light on Christians. I believe that unbelievers watch you to see if you are truly a Christian and your actions speak louder than all your words.

Today, as we hunt eggs and eat with our families let’s take a few minutes to give thanks to the Lord for all His many blessings and for the ultimate sacrifice given for us.

Have A Blessed Day!
