Makeup Monday – Ipsy vs. Birchbox

Monday, September 21, 2015

I love to try new types of makeup products! That is a very simple but totally true statements.  Makeup costs a great deal of money! Another simple but true statement. Did you know that there are some services, you can subscribe to on a monthly basis, that will send you different products all for 10.00?  I subscribe to two of them, Ipsy and Birchbox. Both of them have great products and for 10.00 you get to try new things without breaking the bank. You answer a few questions and they send you products based on your answers. Will you like everything? Probably not. But if you like having a makeup Christmas package delivered monthly, then this is for you. Here are my two packages I received this month.

Ipsy

Ipsy always comes in a hot pink foil package, so you know immediately what it is. They also always put the product in a cute little makeup bag. Each month is a different bag. I’m not really feeling this one, but last months was awesome. Sometimes, but not always, you will get a full size product, such as lipstick, nail polish, eye liner, etc. However, you usually get samples of perfume, face cleaners, and hair products. I decided to look at each box of goodies and see how much they would have cost had I gotten a full size of EVERY product. I searched on Amazon for each product and have a link for each purchase.  So here is what was inside my Ipsy bag.

Birchbox

This is my first Birchbox experience. I have to admit, I am not familiar with products that are inside.  But, isn’t that why I signed up? I like the packaging, but it is not something you are going to save, like the makeup bags. However, how many bags do you really need? I have started giving them away. Here is what was inside my Birchbox.

At first glance, it would appear that the best bang for your buck would be Birchbox, based on the totals for full sized product. But, there is only one full sized product in the Birchbox package and there are three in the Ipsy bag. So the real test will be, which one will you use the most, and will you re-purchase any of the products. I am going to be using these products over the next week, and the next Makeup Monday will be on my findings. See you next Monday!

I got Birchbox for my daughter and one for my husband. We enjoyed it, but we paid 20.00 and 30.00 dollars, not 10.00! Because my husband is bald, he got a watch, socks, etc. It was a fun experiment.

Lisa, that is such a good idea. I may get one for my husband also, he could use some new socks.

I love my subscription to Birchbox. I save the boxes and have used them for organizing my make up drawer. They’re also the perfect gift box for a scarf or jewelry.

I have kept all the boxes, I may have to use them for gift boxes. That would be a great way to recycle. Thanks!

    Hi Tania,
I am speaking this weekend on beauty at our church and was wondering how you feel about Ipsy vs. Birchbox now a year later. You had indicated that you would let us know your review however I can’t find that post.

Do you still think it is a good investment? I hate being wasteful with money and products! Do you use all the items?

    Thanks,

    Karen

I really preferred Ipsy. Mainly because I recognized the brands they sent to me. The Birchbox brands were some I was not familiar with, and I guess that is the whole idea behind subscribing. However, I know longer subscribe to either, I was just giving away the items, not really using them.
