Fashion Blogger 50 Is Not Old is looking polished in a cashmere tee, navy straight pants, and neutral kitten heels

I have always strived to look put-together, but that isn’t something that comes naturally to me. Usually, I am a fly by the seat of my pants kind of gurl, and looking polished everyday takes planning and foresight. Slowly I am getting better about dressing more put-together and polished, and I am here to give all of you the tips that I’ve learned over the years.

If looking polished and put-together doesn’t come easily to you either, then you are going to love today’s post. I’m going to list my favorite tips, and you can start incorporating them a little at a time.

1. Find your iron or steamer

You’ve heard me say this before, but everything looks more polished if it is ironed. The only times that wrinkles look good is on a Shar-Pei dog! Some items won’t stay pressed looking for long, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t let them at least start out looking their best.

2. Monochromatic

When in doubt, dress monochromatically. Dressing in all one tone will create a cohesive and pleasing look, which equals polished and put-together. This is a classic way to dress, and it is easy to do when you buy clothing in colors that you love. You see many people wear head-to-toe black or white, and it is elegant, classy, and polished looking. There are times when you want to look trendy and modern, but a monochromatic look is timeless.

3. Neutrals

Speaking of timeless, you can’t go wrong when you dress in neutral colors. I consider neutrals to be cream, beige, white, taupe, and off-white. But, there are a lot more neutrals in different shades of gray, navy, and browns. Of course, black is a neutral color also, but I included it in my monochromatic tip earlier. Neutrals look elegant, stylish, and are casually simple. Sometimes simple can equal put-together, so don’t go overboard with color.

4. Quality over quantity

You know that I believe that everyone can look beautiful without spending a fortune. With that said, better quality items can make you feel differently than a cheaper item. Items that are cheaply made don’t hold up well, and sometimes we only get a few wears from them before they start looking ragged. I’m sure all of you have something in your closet that you make sure to protect when you are wearing it; you baby it, and you take it to the dry cleaners or handwash it. Someone commented the other day that they could see in my face that I liked what I was wearing. That is how you feel when you are wearing a quality item.

5. A capsule wardrobe

Unless you have money growing on trees in your backyard, most of us have to watch how much we spend. So, adding a few quality pieces is the best investment when you are building a capsule wardrobe. When you start a capsule wardrobe, it may take time to purchase enough items not to get bored of wearing the same things over and over again. But, remember to buy items that are neutrals, similar colors to create monochromatic looks, and certain accessory items that can add interest to your capsule.

6. Make Sure It Fits

If you are creating a capsule wardrobe or buying higher quality items, you want to make sure that everything fits you properly. Fit is everything when it comes to looking polished. A great fitting item can make a thrift store find look fabulous, especially if you make sure that it is ironed. Lol!

7. Put On Some Lipstick

Anytime that you have on lipstick, you look 100% more polished. You don’t have to wear red or bright colors; in fact, a nude lip is very polished looking. It is not about the color; it is about looking like you put effort into your look.

8. Nails and Hair

While we are talking about looking like you put effort into your look, let’s talk about nails and hair. Once again, you don’t have to wear brightly colored nails; clear polish works just as well. However, making sure that your nails are filed, cuticles trimmed, and a coat or two of polish says, “I care about my appearance.” The same goes for your hair. When your hair is styled and groomed, you look way more put-together. I hate it when my roots show because I don’t look as put-together, so I schedule a hair appointment every 5 weeks to keep that from happening.

9. Undergarments

Take the time to go through your unmentionables drawer. If something doesn’t fit, get rid of it. The last thing you want to see when you are dressed to the nines is panty lines or bra bulges. It is worth the time to get a bra fitting or check out this postabout measuring yourself.

10. Accessories

Accessories are like putting the icing on a cake. With that said, certain accessories are more polished than others. Classic items such as pearls will always look polished. Gold and silver are a great choice, and you can never go wrong with a gurls best friend; diamonds. It would be best if you were minimal in your jewelry choices and not have them compete with your outfit. They are supposed to compliment your look and take it to the next level.

This is one of those items that made me feel like a million bucks the minute I put it on. A lot of days, I put on several outfits to take photos, and then I will put on a comfy outfit to sit and write my post. This was the first outfit that I put on, and I couldn’t make myself take it off. Lol! I ended up wearing this to the grocery store, cooking Joe’s birthday meal, and when we had friends over that night to celebrate.

There is something about having on an item you feel special wearing, and I felt SPECIAL in this cashmere tee. I had been looking for a while for a cashmere tee to try, and I was interested in seeing if I thought that it would be too hot for me to wear. Obviously, the answer was that it wasn’t too hot for me. I ordered this tee in a large, and I feel like it fits like it was made for me. Once I tried it on, yanked off the tags, I quickly went in and ordered the Tumeric and Currant versions. This is on sale at 50% off for a limited time and is only $45.00!!! Of course, sizes are going to be limited, so grab it as quickly as you can. I also bought a couple of long-sleeve sweaters that are on 30% off, and those will be perfect for cold snaps and fall and winter. This style is classic, and I will wear them for YEARS!

I am thrilled to hear that pearl jewelry is making a huge comeback and is trending this year. Pearl jewelry looks elegant and classy even when worn with blue jeans. The faux-pearl earrings that I am wearing are sold out, but I found several similar earrings that I’ll link to below. Many of you probably already have pearls in your jewelry box, so go dust those off and put them in your ears.

I am also wearing the Rebecca multi-strand necklace in White Howlite and the Beckett large link bracelet. I just got in the Rebecca bracelet in White Howlite and the Varigated Turquoise, and those are GORGEOUS!!! They are a stretch bracelet and slip over your wrist easily; plus, they will be so cute stacked together this summer.

I’ve had these button cuff ankle pants for a while, but for some reason, they never seemed to get on the blog. Now they are already sold out, so I am sorry about that. However, navy ankle pants are everywhere, so finding a similar pair is not hard to do. I chose a straight-leg pair, so I’ll see if I can find some like that.

I wanted to wear a pair of neutral heels, so I also added a neutral matching handbag. The kitten heels are a pair that looks great with almost anything, and they run true to size. The handbag is sooooo old, but I still carry it occasionally because the color is such a great neutral. Yesterday, I ordered a new handbag that I can’t wait to show all of you, so you can see a sneak peek of what ordered. It looks like the handbag below that I’ve carried forever and is no longer available. You better get this one while you can since it will perfect for spring and summer.

I am celebrating this month because it is Joe’s Birthday month. He told me that I couldn’t make a big deal out of his birthday. I don’t think that announcing for the entire world to see is making a big deal. Lol! So, randomly, each week, I am going to pick a winner for a gift. The gifts will vary in size and price, and I will pick the winner from the comments that I receive during the week.

This week’s winner is…..Lorie!!! Keep commenting, and you might be next week’s winner.
